Home built cold air intake.
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:05:23 PM »
Has anyone ever built one themselves? If so, got any pictures you can share?
I'm going to build my own using 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust pipe. I have the plans laid out in my head.  I just need to get them on paper and work out all the bugs. I can't justify paying 2 or 3 hundred dollars for some bent tubing and an airfilter. From what I've seen these systems can't cost any more than a few dollars for manufactures to produce. 8)
02 2.5.L automatic: 4.0L t.b., 4.0l air intake, K&N filter, Scream'n Demon coil, 8.5mm MSD Super Conductor plug wires, Stage 1 Jet Chip, 29" BFG all terrain KO's. Taurus E-fan, Hummer front bumper, Skyjacker high capacity trans pan, 48" hi-lift, Rubi susp w. 3/4" BB.

BTDT, you'll probably want atleast 3" pipe.  The biggest problems with a CAI is routing it so it indeed gets cold air.  Otherwise, you'll see negative effects.  But then you have to deal with having it mounted too low so it starts grabbing a bunch of dirt and water.

I've went back to the air box for a few other reasons and have my old CAI for sale.

Jeffy, my plans are to make it more of a ram air type system. As soon as the wife gets home with it I am going to dive under the hood to check for the best place to put the pickup. If things don't work out the way I want it to then I'll replace it all with o.e.
