gas vacum thing
« on: August 11, 2006, 03:51:03 PM »
ok today i was scrounging around the back of my jeep looking at the lines comeing out of the gas tank becasue when the gas tank is full. it is hard to start (truns over for like 1 minute or more befor starting then when fires exost smell rich like it is fluded) and it leaks gas... and what i found is behind the pasender rear fender there are 2 hoses that should connect and make a loop back to somewere neer the tank (perhapes a return of some sorts).. but the 2 lines go into this 1 inch diameter ruber thing that has a spring in it and tapers back down to the size of the hose that goes back to the tank (im asuming).. so what im asking is what this thing is so that i can get a new one. it broke right at the end of it just above the hose clamp.

ow ya and its about 3 inches long give or take.

its on a 1990 yj 4banger.. any help apreciated. and vacum or gas line diagrams are welcome.(for this and other issues)

Sounds like you're going to need a FSM or even a Hayes or Chiltons.

Although it sounds weird that anything runs down the passenger side.  All your lines should run down the driver side.  This is because the exhaust runs down the passenger side.  The only thing I can think of is a vent return line from the Evap canister.

Gas can leak on to the exhaust pipe so fix as soon as you can, or there will be a fire

Its a dealer part. The "Schucks"  or "NAPA" wont have it.

You'll need part:  j536 0058    VALVE,vent
and part:    5300 4047   CONNECTOR

Its best to get both parts and do the job once. If you have the part, take it with you, if not just go to dealer parts and ask for these part numbers. Be sure to tell him, what year and model these parts are for.
Will try to upload photo later. The parts man should be able to give you a printout of the parts brake down he has.

Don't remember what it will cost, but I didn't even have to put pen to paper, when I saw the fuel driping on the exhaust pipe, to know that the part was cheaper repair than a burt up jeep.    :)

true.. ive been lucky that its hasnt blown up yet.... reminds me of when we went to colorado and on a sign it said "warning fire danger extremely high".... adns like 10 miles up the road there was a land rover one fier and you could see the fire working its way back to the gas tank.. adn you could feel the heat in our truck... im like you should have goten a jeep instead of a landrover which is made by ford...

anyway ill go to parkjeep this weekend and get that part or atleast order it cuz they proably wont have one on hand...

That's shockingly cheap coming from a stealership.
