Was wondering if some of the wisemen, Jeffy, SMC, Mozman68 can clarify a couple of things for me about suspension lifts on YJs.
I was under the impression that your budget 1-2" lift to accomodate 31s would basically consist of the installation of longer shackles and 1 inch urethane body mount bushings.
In this case, would it be necessary to install new leafs, shocks, add-a-leafs? Could you accomplish the same type of 1-2" lift just with new, more-bowed leaf springs all around + the poly body spacers and simply skip the installation of the longer shackles? Also, if you go with a high quality 4 inch suspension lift (and skip the body lift/shackle route), what are the total costs going to be when all is said and done? Good kits like the Rubicon run close to $1000; you can probably get some friends together, watch some early-season NFL games and do the install over the weekend and make an event out of it
But, what other costs are involved -- like, drive shaft changes, things that tend to break, brake changes, tires/wheels, bushings, u-joint problems, regearing? Personally, what scares me off with a 4 inch, YJ suspension lift (rather than going with budget 1-2 inch lift) is that there could be about $3000-4000 in hidden costs that I can't afford.
Then, like with a recent Jp Magazine TJ Unlimited Buildup, you get the 4" height on your 4 cylinder (yeah, especially 4 cylinder) or 6 cylinder and then you start contemplating the SBC swap installed for $8,000 or the Hemi swap for $15,000
