I bought a new jeep tranny question

I just put a deposit on a 2006 impact orange jeep unlimited.  It has the 42rle automatic transmission, I didn not like the feel of the new six speed.  Does anyone know anything about the transmission.  I read its a beefed up mini van tranny adapted to rear wheel drive.  I really like this new jeep and I am hoping i am not making a mistake.

differences between the auto and manual is the off roading spect and brakes. You can use engine compression to slow a jeep through downshifting a manual tranny, and you can also reverse down a hill better with a manual tranny over a auto. I slipped down a hill when I lost traction in my manual tranny and slammed that thing in reverse and goosed it . if i had to wait for the tourque convertere to kick in i was a rolling stone and a call away from the tow yard

though mostly it comes down to driver prefrence, there are some pros and cons with a auto

Pro-No clutch action required, meaning no clutch replacement (I've  replaced  3 already, but thats because i was learning)

Hard to stall the vehicle, thus saving your pride

Cons- stated before, if u slide downhill in an auto....lookout below....

Need to be carefull of overheating

Not as much driver skill required

Heres an article about the 4 speed
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/four-speed-automatics.html

an article about the six speed
http://www.rockcrawler.com/features/newsshorts/04september/jeep_six_speed.asp

Also note that the manual has a higher first gear ratio 4.46:1 compared to 3.00:1 from the auto.

also found out that both have the same axel ratio 3.73!?! this seems low, could be because my TJ is 4.10 hmmm anyone else got info on this?

I forgot that it's cheaper to replace a clutch(manual) than an entire transmission(auto). Auto's use the brakes much more in any driving condition off or on road. therefore there are a bunch of more things to replace on an auto as opposed to stick. You will lose horsepower with a auto from the tourque converter  over a stick, although minimal, it is noticable in the 4 cylinder of yor. No trans cooler (yep) for the stick.
And who does not want to row their boats anyway going up hill. It looks cool and it keeps us busy.

id second what the last 2 postes said.. sticks are morefun. and autos lose your power and when they age they start to slip.. and no engin brakeing.. i like manuels beter than autos

Ive seen 2001's sell for $12,000.00 with low mileage. Maybe yours could be worth $8,000.00-$6,000.00 .

2.5L's aren't sought after.  There is no collectability and they lack the 4.0L that will get more money.  You're looking at $2000 less then a comparable 4.0L.  If it has a hard top you wan usually expect around $500 more.  At best I think you're looking at around $5000-6000.
