UPS man makes manifold prophecy
« on: October 10, 2006, 10:18:12 PM »
Alright, I've been a little concerned about this, Over the summer the UPS guy that always came to my house always asked about buying my jeep and hence we always talked jeep when he dropped off a package, he asked me the mileage and I said just under 50,000 and he told me that i would have a cracked manifold within the next 20,000 miles.  I've never heard about some cracked manifold thing but anyways if anyone knows or has experienced this let me know please I am very curious

It's not that common on the 2.5Ls.  It's more common on the 4.0L though.  2.5L's usually break off the exhaust studs although they sometimes will get cracks at the 'Y's.  2.5L's have very different harmonics then the 4.0L's.

It cracks at the junction of all 4 pipes together. I bought a Banks torque tube for performance purposes and discovered the 1/2" long crack while putting it on. As it turned out , I needed it anyway. I got 105,000 miles on my 2001 which I just r&r'd the header a month ago , and god only knows how long it has been cracked, since I bought the Jeep brand new off the lot.

Replace it as soon as you can, because you will have not only more power, but it will probably break anyway.
I'll see if I can post a pic of it.

Honestly, mine cracked on the inside where all four come together at the number two cylinder closest to the front of the motor. It cracks on the side that faces the motor.  I would not have been able to spot it if it were on the car basically. My little wand mirrors, coupled with the flashlight and everything else involved would be impossible for me. Then again I have no lift access and I am 6'3" and 250lbs. I am a big boy with big hands and all so it is difficult for me to "get in there". I just did the swap at that mileage, and got my freeway speed  back up to par.
4.0l's get hit at 60 k with cracks and I am assuming also with the 4 cylinders it's true around there. \

Everyone I know that has a 2.5L has or had a crack on their manifold.  My other friend has a 4.0 and it sounds like a kid playing in the bathtub because the leak is so bad.   I had a crack on my 2.5, and I tried JB Weld... Didnt work too well.  So I just ordered the Pacesetter header from 4wd.com for $165.  I am pleased with the header and the performance that it has added, but it did raise the exhaust noise level quite a bit and it wasn't very difficult to install.  All in all a little noise never hurt anyone.

alright bro with the pacesetter, did it literally just bolt right up b/c i am in the process of doing it, and i have to say its a pain in the anus.  my down pipe isnt long enough, and i cant get it to line up without it hitting the oil pan.

The header mounted fine on the head, the bolts for the downpipe were about a half inch too short to use the springs but just went to Home Depot and got some new ones.  But to answer your question, my downpipe didnt interfere with the oil pan.  Is it possible they sent you a wrong downpipe??  If I was you and it seemed all effed up, I would try to contact Pacesetter and see what they could do to fix your problems.  I would send them the photos of your problem.  Most companies are more than willing to fix your solutions at their expense, but I have never dealt with Pacesetter.  Here are some pics of my downpipe.  Also, I do have a TJ so I am not sure if it has a slightly different set up than the YJ.

Sgt Tirrell,
 What year is your Tj?
My pipe totally by passes the tranny, all tucked up inside. My oil pan and tranny stick out though and I got to R&R it cause I got no skid plate and tweaked it to get a leak from it..

No, I have a Banks. My exhaust runs in front of the oil pan and around the tranny.  I guess it can heat the oil up a bit too now that I think of it, an oil cooler would not be a bad idea for me .
