Fatal Crash In Waukegan

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STNG) -- A Beach Park man was killed and a Gurnee woman injured Monday morning when their cars collided at a north suburban Waukegan intersection.

Witnesses told police that at about 8:20 a.m., Kery Bond of Beach Park was driving a Jeep Commander southbound on Route 43 entering the Norman Drive intersection when a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Ashley Story, turned westbound from the northbound lanes on Route 43 and struck Bond’s vehicle, according to a release from Waukegan police.

The impact caused the Commander to slide across the intersection and strike a traffic light support, police said.

According to the release, Bond, 35,who suffered internal injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s office.

Story, 42, was transported to Condell Health Network in Libertyville with a broken leg, the release said. She was treated and released. The Gurnee woman was cited with making an improper left turn, Waukegan police Cmdr. Wayne Walles said.

Story and Bond were the only occupants in their vehicles, the release said.

Waukegan Police Major Traffic Accident Investigators continue to investigate the accident.

I feel for his family.

Question...Is the Commander roof designed that poorly?

The commander hit the wrangler at a high rate of speed. The wrangler (typical woman) turned in front of the commander.

They were traveling opposite ways on the same road, the TJ turned into the side of the Commander making it skid sideways into the curb which made it flip. There's not a mark on the front of the Commander. And I don't know about you, but I've seen just as many idiot male drivers as female.

Yup, same here. People are people and we all do stupid things.

The Commander looks like a dish rag wrapped around that pole. Doesn't look like it put up any resistance to caving in. Maybe the roof design needs another look.

The roof is fine....what are the chances that a car/truck gets knocked on it's side at that rate of speed and hits a strong pole in that exact spot at that exact angle??

Same thing would have happened to almost every other vehicle out there.

Exactly. Also, aren't those poles supposed to be designed to brake away when hit :?:  just to avoid severe collisions like that?  I know they are around here anayway!

Not mine, no roof to stop the pole from directly bashing my head in.

Thats one of the reasons for asking, it seems like every week there's another one down around here from not much more than a love tap.

Good...then we can easily fix your Jeep after your entire body has been pushed through the floor by a big pole.

I just assumed (my bad  ) that the vehicle was going 35mph or under since the article had no mention of a high rate of speed. At 55 mph I could easily see something like that happening.

As yellowta mentioned, I thought those poles were supposed to break away also. I've never actually seen one get hit but I know in my area they are supposed to break away and kick out when they are struck.

They do have nice front seats. By the looks of the pictures though... I think they were destroyed. The motor might be useable though. Can't tell if that's the Limited edition or not. If so, I think they come with a hemi? :?:
