Topic: Simple way to get more oil and filtering capacity

This one is a old one but still not that many people know about it.  Most Jeeps since the mid-80's like the Wrangler, Cherokee and all current Models use a standard oil filter.  In most cases, it will be a Fram size PH16.  These are small filters.  Shorter then a soup can.

One simple and inexpensive way to get more oil and filtering capacity is to move up to a larger filter.  Now you will need one that has the same thread pitch as the old one.  Not only that but the seal at the bottom has to be the same size also.

One filter that is very easy to get a hold of is the Fram size PH8.  This filter is 1.5x larger then the stock filter.  This means it will hold that much more oil and filter that much more.  Not to mention PH8's are used across many different cars so they are usually on sale.  2 for $6 isn't a bad deal.

I've been using one since I accidently found out that the filter fits back in the early 90's.  Also note that some Early YJ's and XJ's use a Metric thread size instead of the standard thread.

Do the 4.0's use the same oil filter as our 2.5's?  I ask because this has come up on another board and if so, there are many other "larger" filter options.

I think they do.  I only know for sure a PH8 will work, but I'm sure there are others.

Yes, the 2.5L and 4.0L use the same filter setup.  I've been running the larger Frams for a long time, I use the gray Tough Guard, whichever one has 99% second pass effeciency, not the base orange Fram that gets bashed on all the boards.

I use a plain jane Orange with Mobil 1.  I change the oil every 6 months. (I don't do enough miles to worry about mileage intervaults.

just for reference:  the 4.7L v8 also uses the ph16 filter.

What size are they compared to the Fram PH8?  Or are they all just cross referanced with the PH8.  Fram sizes are typically used as the standard scale.

I'm not sure how much larger all of them all, but the NAPA Gold is said to be 1 qt. larger than OEM.  The list I posted are ones some NAXJA folks have tried and have had success with.

Yikes, puralator it is from now on.
That's not the first time I have heard bad things about Fram although I have been running them for years with no issues, I like Puralators just as well. I will error on the side of caution.

You know, I've never heard of problems caused by an oil filter.  Especially if you're changing it every 3500-6000 miles.  I know a guy  change his oil even sooner because this was a work truck that racked up mileage fast.  He'd use regular oil and filter and it would come out clear.

I'd heed his warnings though.

"The primary shortcoming of this study is the small sampling size.  I only tested the Ford 5.0L filter.  Some brand names use different manufacturers for different applications.  Another shortcoming is the lack of testing of the filter element media itself."

I have seen the internal construction change within one brand from filter to filter model size.  The site will help you look for the good qualities and weed out the bad since you can open the filter boxes and look into the filter itself.  Even so, you'll have to trust the companies filtration rating.

This is also the reason for using a larger filter.  You gain more oil capacity but also increased filtration.

I know this is an old post, but wanted to add something.  I bought my 97 SE used.  I changed the oil this evening and removed a "fast oil change" filter.  It said replacement for a Fram PH3614.   This is a small oil filter like a Buick V6.  My first thought was someone did a engine swap since the PH8A dwarfs this filter.   I picked up a actual Fram PH3614, and it is the same thead and seal as the PH8A.   I installed the PH8A, works great and I can add a little extra oil.

Shortly after joining this forum, I read in the FAQ's about the optional filters for our engines.  I immediately went out and bought a Motorcraft FL1A filter and changed out that dinky little filter I had been running.  More oil capacity and more filtering?  Win-win situation!
