Question about My Jeep I just bought.
« on: January 22, 2007, 10:09:24 AM »
Hello everyone, I am new here, My name is Marc and I just bought a 1997 Jeep wrangler SE, shes got 68k miles and runs very strong.  I only have one complaint, it starts real hard.  I was told this is somewhat normal and all jeeps turn over a few times before firing because of the way the crank sensor is setup.  My jeep does this everytime if I let it sit for more than five minutes, it'll start hard again and when it does it sputters once and then runs like a dream all day long, I actually had the jeep sitting in water when I got stuck up to the headlights, I had to leave it running for almost 2 hours before getting it out with a come a long because the exhaust was way underwater and it sat tehre and idled like a dream the whole time.  Its just the startup, maybe plugs and wires will cure this?  I added some STP fuel system cleaner the last two tanks of gas, and put in a K&N air filter which helped a lot.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Glad to have found a site for the 4 bangers, at first I was unsure about my purchase but after reading this site I think the old 4 banger will be ok.

Could be a leaky (back to the tank) fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail.

could be alot of things, try a tune up first, b/c well with 68k you need a tune up anyways.  a fuel pressure regualtor is 68 bucks, so i wouldn't jump and get it unless you know you need it.  whereas a tune up plugs wires roto cap, its like 50 bucks.

First off welcome.

Second, when you start the engine do you stick the key in right away and turn the ignition to start it?  It takes a few seconds for the fuel system to pressurize.  You can usually hear the fuel pump start up with the ignition on ON.

If the Jeep starts up after the initial start of the day, I'd guess it's fuel system related.  The system is pressurizing after sitting over night.  If it starts up after the initial startup, then fuel is in the system already.  Could be a fuel pump problem.

If it was a CPS, you'd have intermittent engine problems while it's running.  Not just when it starts up.  I've never heard of hard starts as being normal.  I would think that if teh CPS was going, it would throw up a CEL code or light.

You will want to check teh PCM for stored codes first.  Use these instructions to get them.
