Which Jeep?
« on: January 25, 2007, 06:54:13 AM »
Hello all, first time posting here. I've been reading all the threads here and like what I see, great information. I have a choice that I need to make and I hope you can help me. I've got 2 Jeeps to choose from. One is a 91 with 90k miles, 4cyl, 5 spd, with hard top (I would sell the hard top and replace with soft). Owner is asking $3800. Second is a 95 with 165k, 4cyl, 5 spd, new stereo, Borla exhaust, soft top. Owner is asking $3500 OBO. All other things being equal, good tires, body, interior, well maintained, which would be the better choice? I like the lower miles on the one but also like the lower price and newer model on the other. Thanks.

That's a tough choice... newer with lots of miles or older with acceptable miles.... Isn't 91 a carb 2.5? The newer one is injection.
It may be essayer to find a doner jeep to get a replacement engine on the newer one. How dose the frame look on the older one? In my area it is very rare to find a older jeep with a good frame, they rot so fast with all the salt.

Is this going to be a daily driver or just a off road toy?

No, haven't bought yet. 91 is also FI. 91 is also in Phoenix so doubt any problem with rust. These would be more for play. Also Jeep would be driven down to Mexico and used there.

The 91 sounds better.  You can sell the hard top and get a not too expensive soft top and end up with some cash.  You may even be able to trade with somebody with a cash transfer for the difference (a guy came up to me in the street one day and offered such a deal for my hard top). If all else is equal as you mention, the only advantage of the 95 is larger front axle u-joints.
'95 YJ, 33 x 12.5 mud tires, RE 4.5 ED lift, Atlas 4 speed, rear D44, ARBs front and rear, 4.56 gears, 8000# winch

yea 91 tho it's older sounds better, it has the older style roll bar, and older brake design so, the 95 is better in ways too.  that is a tough decision.  also is it a late production 95 or early, if its a late production, you will have problems figuring out which parts you need b/c jeep put some tj parts on late 95s.  all in all i'd go with the 91

Ok, no 2.5L Wrangler has ever had a carb.  They have all had EFI.  The '91 does not have an older brake design nor does it have the older roll bar style.  For the most part 90% of the parts are the same.  (297x vs. 260x front U-joints, external vs. internal slave and some minor changes with the carrier are the only ones that might be of any concern.  For someone just starting out, it won't even be an issue.)

Price means nothing.  You can recoup the difference by selling the hardtop, if that's your plan.  What really makes the difference are the mileage.  Depending on how well it was taken care of you could be looking at a rebuild in only 30,000 miles or less.  70,000 less miles is worth $400 difference.  I'd say $1000 would be a good pillow.  If that engine goes, you'll be looking at a whole lot more.  Speaking of problems, you better have some money left over to fix any preexisting or new problems that might come up.  $1000 would be a good pillow.

Doh!  I just remembered.  1991 was the only year for the new MPFI engine and the OLD style cage.  Sorry about that!

The older cage being the one that slants straight down towards the rear instead of a bend at the rear then down?

I believe the engine was TBI from 1984-1990.  Although the CJ's ('83-'84) always used carbs.  I don't think the XJ ever had carbs.  MPFI started in 1991 and has been unchanged till '06 when they stopped production.
