Topic: Lesson of the day, un mounting tires by hand

My dd is a Kia Spectra 5, so shoving 4 rims with tires in it is a pain.  I've put tires on by hand before, but never tried removing them.   Couple lessons I learned while doing it.

Tire #1  30 minutes - It's a lot easier if you cut all around the sidewall on the outside if you are tossing the tires anyway.  Break the beads by putting a highlift on it and jack up the jeep. 

Tire #2  20 minutes - spraying some wd40 on the beads makes it a heck of a lot easier to pull the tires off the wheel

Tire #3  15 minutes - tires seem to come off better at 60 degrees than they do at 30 degrees

Tire #4  15 minutes - didn't learn anything here except that it's a whole lot of work to save $5 a tire at the local garage.

I have to agree with you alot of work to save 20 bucks  but a little experience never hurt nobody

Just come by my house lol will throw them on my tire machine. makes easy work of it. Sometimes left over stuff from having a repair shop comes in handy lol

There's an old tire repair shop near where I live where they remove and mount by hand.  They do this all day long and they can do it about as fast as a machine using levers and big rubber hammers!  They break the bead using a lever device that looks like they built themselves.

You'ld get some big arms doing that every day.

I used to mount and remove tires back in HS on a manual rig.  Basically a platform with some adapter cones and a couple long bars.  It was slow and took a lot of effort not to mention you risk scratching the rim of the wheel.

When I have tires to dismount, I take them to the service station where they have the automatic tire machine and for $20 all 4 are dismounted.  Well worth the $20.  Although, being able to take a tire off in the field is a good skill to learn.

I just did my motorcycle tires, I forgot to overfill them with air to set the bead and rode around town looking like a fool for two days.
