"Pretty boy" Jeeps...
« on: February 23, 2007, 01:57:52 PM »
I have owned my 97 TJ for a little over a month now and already you can tell its been offroad. It was obvious when I bought it that I was going to be the first one to take this Jeep offroad. My Jeep has numerous light scratches down the sides from Brush, stray branches etc, a chipped fender flare in the rear and a few other scuffs here and there. Now I do realise that some people live where there arent wooded trails, and rock crawling is bigger but there should still be a fair amount of rock rash yet I would say almost 80% of the Jeeps I have seen are in better shape than even mine. Is it that most people build Mall crawlers that hardly see gravel or can you just not tell from the pictures that these Jeeps are offroad trucks? I dont know, just somthing I noticed when looking through pictures for a few hours last night, not on this site, but just in general, so many of them look like showroom condition yet are lifted with larger tires, winches, tow hooks and aftermarket bumpers all of which look brand new and untouched.
Post up some pictures of your "offroad damage", lets see your scratches, scrapes, dents and other stuff, make me feel good about my Jeep!

You are the minority of minorities.  Probably out of all 4x4's sold less then 3% ever see anything we'd call offroad.  Many places areas are closed to vehicle traffic and have hefty fines.  A Majority like the 'look' and never plan on taking tehm offroad.  Many of these have terrible gearing, often left stock.

Mine has scratches in the paint, dented and scratched front bumper, a dent on the rear right corner, slightly deformed left front fender, dented center and gas tank skidplates, crushed exhaust pipe, and a bent shock mount on the rear axle.  Still works fine though.

My tj is stock as far as most things go. I have managed to mangle the front bumper and scratch the entire drivers side in several places. Also, the windows on the soft top looked pretty new when I got it. I replaced them today  (with a tinted set ) and they are scratched beyond belief due to narrow trails and branches scraping the sides of the Jeep. Even though its stock I don't believe in not using it what it's for.

Mine is getting painted, so no exposed panel metal to rust in the future.  The big dent I have in the tailgate wasn't because I went nose to the sky on a climb - the last owner apparently backed in to something   ::)

As my DD, my YJ needs to stay presentable, no apologies   If it was my second or third ride, then I could afford to do the Montana-style, off-the-grid, dented/welded/rusted Jeep bit.    Course, if I rolled up in such a ride, my girlfriend would tell me to take a hike.

I have been fortunate enough to ride dirt bikes through trails fifteen years prior to Jeeping so I pick clean lines or nothing at all because my pocket book has limits. I have taken my Jeep up black diamond trails :yikes: pedal to the metal even on bald tires and completely stock so it has seen extensive offroad. When I get a beefed up rear end and long arm suspension i'll do more, but my daily driver gets pampered for now.

wait, i got rash on my lower control arm "hooks" ,gas tank skid, tranny pan skid, oil pan bent to a V up front, both diffs dinged.     I need to invest in skid plates for the diffs, gear box, oil pan, gas tank. It takes money to wheel.

My Jeep looks OK at a distance but the paint isn't that great up close.  I've got HUGE scratches across my hood and in the back from low branches.  Lots of water marks all over and a small tear in the fender.  Scratch in one of my wheels where I slid off a rock and nicked the rim.  Dents in the hood...  Scratches in my driveshaft from hittings rocks.

I still need to knock out the windsheild pins and replace them with bolts so I can take the windsheild off.  If anythings going to get damaged, I'd rather leave it at camp or at home.  I still need to get some decent corner and rocker guards so the body stays straight.  My old school nerfs are in relatively good shape even after resting them on stuff.  I don't want to look like I'm driving a balled up piece of paper though.  (aka: Rick Pewe's CJ3A)   His Jeep got to the mount is was dangerous to drive because of all the damage.

My dd is a 90 yj that is really clean for it's age, it's stock as a rock on 30s and I like to give guys the finger when they won't wave to me because I am stock. My wheeling rig is an 88 xj wag. on 34s that has more dents than a golf ball. The more I do to my xj to make it trail worthy the more it becomes a trailer queen and the less it becomes street legal.

speaking of the jeep wave.. its really making me made that so many soccer moms and such get jeeps and don't knew about / do the jeep wave.. knowledge of the jeep wave should be required to by a jeep. im sick of throwing a jeep wave out there and getting nothing in return :brick:
