It's in the tank - part of the fuel pump

Yep in the tank, but I think you can replace it.  helped a neighbor with his Grand Cherokee, pull the tank and pump-sending unit assembly and replace the pump and filter.  prety streight forward.  Sucks though.

Hmm, on a TJ and most other newer Jeeps the Fuel filter/pressure regulator is on top of the tank.  If you look at the tank from above, there is a round hockey puck at the top of the sender/fuel pump housing.  The filter is removable and can be replaced even though they give it a 'Lifetime' status.

Jeffy,

I think the filter is not sold separatly for the TJ.  My understanding is you have to purchase the entire pump.  This is what I have read and do not have any personal experience.

You know it's true because a friend of a friends sister's babysitter said aliens hypnotized and implanted it in her brain.  Or you read it in the Inquirer or something.

Well the FSM does show you how to remove and replace it...  I've seen them for sale online but I've never been to the dealer.  This is probably similar to how you can only buy a master and slave for teh clutch as one piece.  They want you to buy everything and not just parts.

i called the dealer and the regulator and the filter come as one for $150.00. So, if what jeffy wrote correctly I feel as though I would like to try to replace the filter only. I am thinking the pumps go bad because of a clogged filter, that and people drive around with low fuel level which in turn does not let the cold gas cool the pump during operation.

I had to fix my door handle last year and the dealer wanted $25.00 for the handle, instead of the little plastic holder for 50 cents. I used a filed down syringe cap instead.
