35" tires
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:13:31 PM »
I was wondering how many of you are running 35" tires.  I am currently installing a D44 and am thinking about Super Swamper SSR 35X10.50's.  I have enough lift for the tires, but  needed more info on gearing.  I have 4.56 gears with 33's and like the off road performance.  In order to keep the same performance should I regear to 4.88?  Even though this is not my DD I still would like to be able to run at least 50 on the highway.

Well, I currently run 35x12.5R15's and have 4.56:1 gears.  I want 5.38:1 gears only problem, the D30 can only go up to 4.88's. (I have a D44 rear already.)  I've had it setup this way for 5-6 years now though.  :'(

Yeah thats my problem also, but the cash to swap out the front is not available so I will be limited to 4.88.  I have to regear the D44 either way so I am leaning towards spending the extra $150 to get 4.88's for the front instead of staying with 4.56

Compare your stock setup (27's/3.07??) to the 33's/4.56 and see what the ratio should have been with 33's. Then see what 35's would give you for a new ratio. The difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is only ~7% difference, whereas tire difference is ~6%.

I originally had 3.73s in the stock TJ on ~28" tires. For 34" tires, I calculated 4.53 ratio. I bump to 4.88s because of the 4cyl and pushing a lifted brick in the wind. My rpm at 70mph is ~3400. Stock at 70 was ~3100

Well, looking back at your original post, you want to be able to do 50mph.  That shouldn't be a problems for either gears, unless you're going up a huge hill.  Even so, that should still be done over 50mph.

The dilemma I had was if I should gear the rear to 5.38's and just not wheel till I could swap out the front axle.  Although, if you're installing your gears yourself then the added cost of going to 4.88's then changing the rear again when you swap the front, will be minimal and you should be able to recoup most of it.  I went to 4.56's back when there was no 4.88's so I had no choice really.  If you're going with anything 33" and above and sticking with either stock axle, then there is no reason not to go with 4.88's.  It's still not low enough but it's that much better.

BTW: no 2.5L should have 3.07:1.  Stock gearing for 2.5L's have always been 3.73:1 for the auto's and 4.10/4.11's for the manuals unless there was a shortage.  Then you might see a auto with 3.54:1 and a manual with 3.73:1 but those aren't nearly as common.  There was a year when TJ's has 4.56's standard too.

It would be the first year for the 6-speeds right after they went to the 2.4L.  I think that would be 2004 or 2005.  The following year they switched to 3.73:1 in both Manuals and Automatics.  I know 2006's has 3.73:1 gears while the 2003's has 3.73:1 and 4.10/4.11:1's which was carry over from the 2.5L's.

I'm 90% sure that 03 is when they put in the 2.4L and I know that in 05 was when they put the 6 speed in. Mine is an 04 and it was in the middle of the two. I got a 2.4 and a 5 speed.

OK, so that makes it a '05.  '03 was when the 2.4L started since that was the same year for the Rubicon.  I don't have an '04 FSM to check but I know the '05 lists 4.56's.  Things really changed a lot in those late years.

i run 35's still on 410's and its not too bad but i have puched my motor up a ton.  i have 456's in my new axles but don't have them quit ready yet.  i want 488's but i already had the 456 so why not.  i would probably just go to the 488 if you need one already

I dug up my 04 book from when I was shopping for my jeep, it says the SE 5 speed comes stock with 4.11 gears. The auto comes with 4.56

I started to rebuild the D35 tonight (I have to put 3.73 gears in it and install it on my sisters Jeep because she is giving me her D44) and the gears are already 4.88's.  My receipt says 4.56 from when I ordered them only six months ago but I did not install those myself and never checked the box so???  I guess I will be putting 4.88 gears in the D44.
