Any XJers out there?
« on: March 04, 2007, 08:43:40 PM »
I'm expecting my tax refund in a week or so and then the XJ is going under the knife. But before I do that, I was wondering if any of the XJers out there could shed some light on some things, and maybe show me some pics of their rigs.

Mainly I'm wondering about lifts. I read on another forum where a guy put the Rusty's 4.5" lift on his 4 banger and ended up getting almost 6" of lift out of it. He figured it was because the 2.5L weighs so much less than the 4.0.  Anybody have a similar story, or was this guy just nuts?

My plan is to go with 4.5", most likely from Rough Country, and 31x10.50 TrXus MTs. That amount of lift with that size of tire is a good amount of space, but I like the way it looks and I've heard good things about the setup. Heck, the guy who wrote the XJ Builder's Guide ran that same setup when he started his project (even though it was the RE and not the RC lift). But if I get the 6" out of it, well that would just be ridiculous, not only in looks but a t-case drop kit wouldn't even begin to correct the angles.

So what's the word? Anybody running a 4.5" lift and 31s? Anybody running a 4.5" lift and sitting at 6"? And anybody got any pics of what this whole thing might look like? Replies would be much appreciated!

I ran my 93' XJ with a 4.5 RockCrawler lift with 31's until just recently, just upgraded to 33's.  I found that I got about 4.5", no more with my lift, but then again, my lift was slightly used upon installation.  Without cutting any sheet metal, 31's fit rather nicely.

a few things that cud happened.. 1 his old springs could have been warn out and running lower than stock (know this happens with leafs but not sure about coil springs). 2. the lift could be higher to begin with so that when it brakes in after a wile it is 4.5 inches
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

Yeah, the leaf pack thing I could understand, because his Jeep was like an '87. And I know lifts are typically a little higher when you first put 'em on, and gradually settle after a while, but he said it had been over six months and he was still sitting at 6".

I don't know, I find stories like this all over the internet, most of them worse than this. One guy bought a Rough Country lift and had the front coil springs break in half going down the interstate. Seems like everybody's got a horror story, and they plaster it all over the internet screaming "DON'T BUY FROM THESE GUYS, blah blah blah." I'm trying to get the lift, wheels, and tires all at once, and hopefully have it all in/put on in three weeks, but stuff like this makes me a little scared to drop $1,700 bucks.

Spend your money on a quality kit and you won't have to pay twice.  Rough Country has always been a poor mans kit.  They haven't updated much of their stuff since the 90's.  If I was going to lift a XJ, I'd go with a Rubicon Express kit.

It's a poor man's kit for a poor man. I know the RE kit is a better put together, more complete kit, but I don't have that kinda $$$. I don't know... I'm not planning on crawling rocks or doing anything crazy, I just want to be able to get out in the woods and have a little fun. I don't wanna pay $1,000 for the lift alone when I only paid $4,800 for the Jeep. I don't know...  :brick: :guns: :fitz:  :yikes:

There's not enough smileys to describe my frustration.

Nothing wrong with a 3.5" RE lift.  Starting price is under $400.

This place is an XJ goldmine. If you are looking to just get a few inches on the cheap, there is plenty info here. I made my own Leaf spring packs using Dakota leaves. The write up is on the site, just search for Bastard Pack
