Is the box tight?

hmmm....nah...I won't go there...

I don't know...tight where??  Mounting bolts??  I think the sound is coming from inside the box.  I guess I really won't be able to check until tomorrow.  I 've never even touched the thing...didn't look like it moved when I was checking for the sound...even put my hand on it to confirm that the popping was coming from the inside...I think...

Cheap tool is a piece of 1/2" tubing , 3-4' long. Place one end near your ear and move the other end around engine bay to check for exhaust, intake & other strange sounds. Can help to isolate where the sound may be coming from.

You can use a long screwdriver or a wooden dowel, too.

I started having the same problem in my YJ; I noticed it after I installed the lift, so I always kind of thought it was the suspension, but it only clanks when in a turn and not when compressing (like if I hit a speed bump while going straight, it will not clank), and does not do it constantly (although I hear it more than a couple of times a day!).  Let me know if you figure this one out (and I AM hoping it is not the steering box!).

Check your Ubolts. Right after a lift it is common to have to tighten them a couple times. Had it happen to me after I replaced mine.

This doesn't explain the trouble with my TJ. This weekend I'm going to pull it into the garage and check the suspension. Mine only does it when the vehicle is in motion while turning left or right.

Holy old threads....yes...I did figure it out.

My transfer case was never truly out of 4WD even though the shifter was down and the light was off.

I simply pulled it into 4wd and slammed it down to make sure it wasn't grabbing anymore...it's not that it was really in 4wd...it was just sort of 1/2 way...trying to grab every once in a while.

Hmmm, this could be my problem. I just started doing it today. Yesterday, I didn't hear it at all. However, We've got some pretty slick back roads here due to snow squalls. I had it in 4 yesterday a few times and it may be "stuck.'' I'll try what you did and see if it works.

i had that clunk.. until i removed my tracbars... so if you sill have those in check if they are looses or the bushings are worn out.

I'm going to have to do that also. It's not the transfer case and it's coming from the rear end... I think.

YJ's, especially those that are lifted, will make a clunk from the front end because of those stupid track bar extensions.  They never stay tight.  I got irritated with mine and remove the whole trackbar.  Now I just live with the bumpsteer.

Jeffy, so the side effect of taking out the track bar is bumpsteer?  I am considering loosing my trackbar, but since my Jeep is a daily driver (no offroading in the year and change that I have had it), I am not sure if I will because I have not yet done research on what would be the worst case scenario of what to expect if I do remove it...
