I had to get a new long block due to a engine knock. I found a motor with supposedly 5000 miles on it it. also supposedly is out of a 1997 TJ. I was looking at the tag on the valve cover and the 6 above YR make me think it's a 1996 motor out of something Else because of the no wrangler in 96. Then I see H3YJ and think It could be a 1995 because of the YJ part. I need to the year for the gasket set and to make sure it will work in my 98 TJ also It's just good to know. I hope my atachment works

Well, the best way is to look at the engine itself.  There are key signs if it's an ODBI or a ODBII engine.  That's the easiest way.  If you really wanted to get an accurate date there is a date cast into the side of the block.  but keep in mind that the block didn't really change any.

The TB is a good sign of if it's ODBI or ODBII.  If it's ODBI there will be no MAP Sensor on the TB.  There will be an extra port on the intake below the TB if it's ODBI but ODBII doesn't have it.

The date should be on the driver side under the exhaust manifold.

I just went and looked it says 100595. so it must be a 95 or just the block was made in 95?
If it is a 95 would it still work with all my 98 stuff like intake, exhaust, water pump because all I got was the long block no TB or any thing else.

It means when the block was cast.  The blocks are basically unchanged across the board.  Typically, you'll see dates several months ahead of the time they are put together.  So that block if it was ever built, would probably have been used in a 1997 TJ.

Oh, ok, you said it was salvaged.  You can still buy NOS or New Old Stock which have never been installed.
