Rampage D-Ring Shackles... question
« on: March 17, 2007, 02:50:27 PM »
I'm ordering these from Q-tec. Do they come in pairs or is the price ($39.99) for 1? Also, anyone else use them? What do you think of them? I'm getting ready for the spring/summer trail rides and I'm doing a few minor upgrades. Oh, I'm getting new tires on Tuesday. I'm sticking to 235/75/15's because of the auto trans and the 3.73's. Made the appointment today for 5 BFG all terrain ko's. I'd love to go to a full mud terrain but can't since it's a daily driver that gets a lot of highway use. I need something that will last for a bit.

This thing?
http://www.quadratec.com/products/12007_202.htm

Looks like just one, also looks like a really bad design.  10,000 - maybe in a straight line, but I'd bet an angle or sideways pull would bend that thing off at the first bolt.  I would not pass that as a tow point for my clubs inspection.

I definitely would not cheap out on a safety item, go for a bumper with welded through mounts.

Or a conventional tow hook is just fine, no need for a whole new bumper.

I'm not a fan of those especially since they're 1 each and not sold in pairs.  Standard tow hooks are OK but if you want something different, I'd go with Euro-spec tow points.  They're stamped steel and are plenty strong.

Otherwise, forget about mounting the hooks there and weld or bolt on some D-link shackles to the bumper.  (I'll probably go this route with my bumper)

What's that look like?

Well, they aren't allowed to have pointy hooks on the fornt of their cars and trucks.  It's basically a bracket with two small holes drilled for the frame and a large hole punched at the other end of a loop. Then the bracket is bent into an L shape.  I think earlier ones actually used a swivel with a loop like a actual shackle.

Not a big fan of the euro spec design. Got a source where a can get the D-link shackles? I'm going to need something with the mounts included. The way things stand now I have no way to mount a d-ring shackle to the stock bumper. All I've got is my stock tow hooks.

Don't know if I'd use them on a stock bumper though......

I agree, even with a pretty good side backing plate a YJ bumper would be marginal.  Pretty sure that a TJ bumper is even thinner.

I was thinking the same thing. I have some 1/4" sheet metal that I was thinking of using to mod the stock bumper. Also, I noticed that the stock bumper isn't attached to the frame on the bottom, only the top where the stock tow hooks are. Makes things kind of flimsy if you ask me. Right now a I don't have the cash to buy all new bumpers but I do have a good supply of scrap steel and my welding has gotten much better since I first posted the pic of my "Redneck Trophy." I'll see what I can come up with. It might be a few weeks but I'll post pics when I get things finished.

Oh, thanks for the link jeffy.

Ok, I'm going with these and they are getting attached to the frame. They are NOS from a dodge M37.
