Shocks...SHOCKS!
« on: March 19, 2007, 06:37:01 PM »
Hello Everyone, This is my first post.

When I came home from boot camp and the MP Acad. I treated myself to a hot red chilli pepper 98 wrangler. 2.5 prestine cond. I love it. I Just sold my beloved 2 dr sport cherokee. and that gives me a pretty nice budget.

I am pretty decided on a lift. Rims and Tires. My lift does not come with shocks, and thats ok with me. I am trying to decide if I should go and get some skyjacker nitro's (or equivelant) or some 5100s or opt for the fox 2.0s. no matter how you look at it those foxs are expensive, and I can swing it, But can I justify it? Is it worth it? Necessary ?  I drive fast on the road and they are decently crappy roads and I will offroad it like its intended. I am not one for balls to the wall mud bogs. I like to flex and finesse I guess. But on the other hand I am hard on things when I want to be. Should I opt for the 2.0s? and if so, do I need the resevoir, I honestly dont see myself needing the extra capacity of it, but I am not too sure, thats why I am asking you guys? I was thinking about the 2.0s in the front and some 5100s or 5150s in the rear? maybe

any help will be appreciated. Thanks Mike

the 5150s are nice shocks, a lot of people like the skyjacker Hydros (i think the 5150s will be my next shocks). I've heard people say the nitros are pretty stiff for jeeps. What lift kit are you planning to go with?

i like rancho shocks.. we have the rancho 9000x selectable shocks on our willys jeeps.. you have a selectable dial on them form 1-9 that you can select to soften or harden your ride.. comes in handy when we were bottoming out on ruff rocks with my brother and i in the back so we adjusted the shocks and it was much better..

there nice shock.. but there could be better since im not an expert.

Sonds like you need some adjustable shocks like Rancho RS9000X, I had a set on my CJ and really liked them.  I used the remote and it is worth the money because it is a pain to switch them manually.

Yeah, sorry about the information copy but I got distracted and posted it with out reading the previous post.  These shocks should be cheaper than the fox shocks even with the remote.

If I was buying shocks I'd go with Bilstein.  Most of my friends that once used Rancho 9000's have switched.  5100's are a good buy and a decent shock.  If you're not going to be changing the suspension again any time soon then you might consider 5150's but for most it's overkill.

General rule of thumb, don't cheap out on shocks.  A lot of bad suspension come with even worse shocks making for a extremely stiff ride.

Can't go wrong with Bilstein (what I'm using).

But, if you don't mind being the first here, you may want to try out the Edelbrock shocks that have been on the market for a while.  They have a patented valve technology that apparently gives decent ride quality and excellent off-road compression/rebound in the same product

For $164 you get a set of 4 of those Fox 2.0 shocks?  That's not just for one shock, right?

no unless you have like really good and really bad at either end.  you may notice a little differance front to rear but i wouldn't worry about it.  i use nitros in the front and rancho rs9000x in the rear so i can adjust the rear for weight in the back and it works great.
