95' 2.5L YJ Failed NOX PPM
« on: April 11, 2007, 09:14:59 PM »
Hey guys ive searched this topic and really havent found an answer...i have a 95' YJ 2.5L , everything is just about stock except for a TB spacer, and a ACCEL high output coil and 8mm wires and a flowmaster exhaust ,

I failed the NOX PPM

25/25 :  Allowed - (1163)   My reading (1400)

50/15 : Allowed (1273)  My reading (1540)

(1 month prior to the test ) I replaced the plugs, cap and rotor and button, cat converter, and there is only one O2 Sensor i replaced that also.. and the is no EGR system... Any Suggestions ? :puzzled:

First, was it fully warmed up when you took it in?  Second, no way to be sure but it may have to do with the new cat, there are several types .  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter  and http://www.importtuner.com/features/0610impp_catalytic_converter_removal/index1.html

Im not sure what type it is, i just bought it going by my make-model-engine size ... i know its a WALKER brand. I read somewhere that the Airraid TB spacer might have something to do with it??

Did they give you a print out of the whole range of gases?  What's the whole range?  Was there anything else it was high on?  I doubt it's the TBS unless you were border line to begin with.

First have you checked to see if there were any CEL codes stored in the PCM?  Have you checked the CCV?  That gets clogged easily.  Depending on what the other reading are you could have a number of things.  Low fuel pump pressure, partially plugged injectors, a vacuum leak, or defective O2, MAP, ECT, or IAT sensors. A lean air-fuel ratio causes high NOx, high HC, high O2, and low CO and CO2.  Also a Bad thermostat or improper one could cause similar problems.

Move to Florida.  No vehicle inspections here.

Or MN.   We had vehicle inspections for a few years before they figured out that most cars that are running bad enough to not pass emmissions get killed by the winters here.

ow emissions testing.. i remember my dads friends cj7 with the 4.2l 6cly couldn't pass the test unless we made it run like shit. this was when i was like 10 so i don't remember what my dad did to make it pass but it seemed weird having to make a car run bad to pass... glad we dont have to do that anymore though.

race fuel. get some high octane in a almost empty tank and beat it on the highway before you go in. delaware has some of the hardest standards for emissions and i haven't seen that not work on anything that wasn't really on its last legs. hell i even know of a guy who was running on 7 cyl in a 302 bronco and still passed doing that. just saying.... :naughty:

your really close. ok stupid question time... did you warm it up before you went in? (ie: highdrive it for a half hour first to blow everything out) second, have you changed your plugs lately? if not try platminums or the e3's. they have a good burn, cost more but will clear up some of the carbon build up. third and really have you tried some high test gas? race fuel will work but if you have new plugs and run a higher octane it will burn hotter clearing stuff out, if you highway it before emissions testing.

delaware is really one of the hardest states for inspection because of all the factories here we have to cut down on carbon output some how, so get rid of the poorly matian cars and older cars on the road. put the cost on consumers noit the state. the joys of living in a tax free state. they get you going not coming.

but, back on topic, have you done all that?

I actually changed the plugs today... they were about 3 months old.... and all 4 of the were dark/redish brown....im not buring any coolant , or oil i know for sure.... i put Champion Platinums in it today, and fill the tank half way with 93 octane , and put 2 bottles of 104 octane booster in it......
