Poll: Do you lock your jeep?
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:44:52 AM »
Well after reading JeepManMarc's post about having his jeep broken into and my own experience with security in a softtop (robbed of sub, amp, and face/ CD book <---- "/" separate incidents) I was wondering if you guys locked your jeep?

I've decided to just not lock my doors.  No matter what there will be theives, so i try to park in safe places, but if they are gonna steal i would prefer they not destroy my ride in the process so i just don't ever lock it up

Yeah don't lock your doors to keep people from getting in (unless hardtop).  Course, a lot of times a thief seem to go like this: "Ok I brought my knife, I slashed the window, I'm reaching my hand in to unlock the door...hey, wow the door was unlocked anyway, ha guess I didn't need to slash that window after all!"

I use those hinge locks to "lock" doors to the body.
Everything I have on it I have locked down - ton of keys to keep track of and have backups of.

I do not lock mine, but have a fairly elaborate alarm. I would rather them pull the handle to set it off than cut the top  first. Usually the the large EL alarm flasher is enough for them to find something else to do.

I probably don't have to because of where I live, but it's a force of habit.

Of course, I run no doors and a safari top almost all summer....have the Tuffy center console and glove box locked for the stereo face, iPod, garage door openers, etc.
2009 Audi S5....what....its 4wd...sort of....

I lock everything out of habit, the one time someone broke into my jeep was last summer while I was at work. They jsut unzipped the window and stole my old crappy cell phone because it was the only thing in there. I never leave anything worth stealing in it anyway. Oh, and I also had a $5 winning scratch off ticket stolen when the top and doors were off.

I have one of those fancy alarm thingers too.  It's peculiar though, i can jump on the back bumper without it going off but if i touch the hood it goes off.  I also found out that thunder sets it off.  I usually don't have the top on and i learned to not leave anything in the jeep.  I had cds stolen but that was kind of my fault, i left them sitting in the back with the top off.   :asshat:

I lock my doors unless I leave the top down, don't have uppers or full doors on.  Many people don't lock there Jeeps but those people usually don't leave anything worth stealing inside.  If they do it's probably a 50% chance it will be gone when they get back.  The casual thief will grab your stuff since it's such an easy target.  Locked or unlocked, with a softtop, it's easy enough to get in.  Although, unless they are a bit more skilled/knowledgeable, they may slash your windows anyway.  There have been account where a Jeep was broken into (doors unlocked) and the robber slashed the windows and seats.

This all really depend on the condition of your Jeep and where you're parking it.  If your Jeep looks like a POS, you won't have anything worth anything inside so there probably is little need to lock anything up.  Even if it doesn't look that great but has been modified enough to where the parts are worth something, they might just steel the whole thing.  This has happened in the San Diego area many times over.  Sometimes it's someone looking to cash in.  Other times it might be another Jeeper looking to grab parts for their own project.

I've had four different alarms in mine so far.  From high dollar Alpines to low end DEI's (Clifford/DEI/Viper).  The last one was a DEI Rattler.  Half the features on the high-end alarm, I never used.  It was a waste of money.  The only thing I do is park in areas where it's less likely to get broken into.  With no top I end up taking most of the stuff out of the back of the Jeep and lock up everything else.  Glove box is emptied too.

That's just my problem. I really would like a gps because I have the world's worse sense of direction, but what am I going to do, take it out every time I get out of my jeep? Sucks because I grew up in the #2 safest city in the country. I could leave my purse sitting on the hood of my jeep in a parking lot and no one would take it, but now I live on my own and get $5 lotto tickets stolen. Oh well.
