Pitch and Roll indicator
« on: May 06, 2007, 03:27:03 AM »
I bought one of those pitch/roll indicators in a small order I placed with QTec.  Thought it would be a good idea because I felt like I was getting ready to lift my front wheels on a couple of climbs and I really didn't know the Jeeps limits to well (and didn't want to "learn" those limits  after I flipped over backwards climbing up some slick rock)

So the indicator says you get in to the red zone at around 30(degrees?) of pitch (think its the same for roll). When the indicator is in the red, I guess it is indicating that you are driving off-road at a potentially dangerous angle.

You guys think these indicators are accurate or overly conservative?

I had a something simular years ago and I always got into the "roll over" zone, I found it more of a novelty than a tool.

we have those on our cjs..but the dash ( on the jeep) is to small so they always get hit so that they aren't level in the first place making them practically useless.

Well, most of those gauges are more of a novelty then anything else.  There are two types out there though.  The one with the Jeep or truck with two separate gauges for pitch and roll.  The other is a bubble meter that just shows roll.  Without knowing the actual roll angle, you're really guessing.  This has to take into account your CG so knowing the vehicles weight would be nice to know.  Amount of lift would also come into play not to mention how soft/hard your suspension is.  This is why many are installing larger tires with shorter lifts and just chopping the offending body panels for clearance.

In any case, most of the time it feels like you're going to roll but in fact you're not even close to rolling.

I would, but my girlfriend is deaf, dumb and mute.  Course, this does have some advantages occasionally

I've got a good thing going right now.  I've got her convinced that fixing up the jeep is cheaper than buying a new car!  No pitching and rolling with the wife in the car or its bye-bye jeep and hello minivan.

my girl wants me to go further then i want to. last time we went out it was in a flood and with out a snorkel she wanted my to go deeper then the hood. im sitting on 33s and she wants to go deeper. i hate to use her as a pitch and roll, cause thats exactly what we'd do.

Hell, at least all of your women are getting in the Jeep with you my wife won't go because she thinks I'll kill her.  I haven't done anything to warrant mistrust like roll one, damn youtube!!!

Before I met my wife she rolled a CJ 3 times down a steep dune. She won't drive a Jeep since, but she still rides shotgun. Last year at the Northwoods Jamboree she was brought in front of the group and was recognized as "loudest passenger" at the dinner gathering. While descending down an obstacle called Holy Crap 2, everyone heard "Oh god, please don't kill me!" screamed at the top of her lungs. It was hilarious.

Now what was this thread about again?

Getting back on topic, it sounds like your pitch and roll indicator is working fine!
