Biodiesel Jeeps? Gas it too high
« on: May 15, 2007, 11:20:24 AM »
Okay I can't take it much longer.  these gas prices are out of control.  I am sick and tired of it and I am thinking of converting it to biodiesel if it is possible and affordable.  Has anyone ever heard of converting a jeep to biodiesel can it be done?  After the conversion can i still use normal unleaded if the biodiesel is not available?

thanks
Chad

You would need a regular diesel engine to convert to bio-diesel.  Regular gasoline is not compatible with it.

Here is an interesting website though.

Consider the expense of swapping in a diesel engine and the gas price won't seem too bad :'(

you could try making your own ethanol. It will get slightly less mileage but it'll cost less in the long run.

um except for the fact that it takes about 1 gallon of gas to make 1 gallon of ethanol and you get worse millage from ethanol.

ethanol is entirely different than biodiesel. Biodiesel is made from old frying grease. Ethanol from plant materials.

Fact?  Source?

You can make your own.  I believe it's the only way to legally own a distillery, too.

you can get a license to make it but your only allowed to make so much. Something like that, I can't remember right now. I looked into a couple years ago for a project. You can also sell it to other people as fuel to make a little extra cash. That and you get a tax rebate/break for making it a certain proof and having a cleaner burning vehicle.

Canola oil is made from plants.

Same goes for Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil, etc...  You don't need to use OLD oil either.  Funny thing is in the UK, they tax anything that goes into a car.  So to be legal they would need to pay a tax.  Luckily for us the US Govt. hasn't dipped their hands into the cookie jar so to speak. (yet)

It'd be nice if farmers used ethanol or bio-diesel-powered vehicles to harvest the food-stuffs to make the bio-fuels so they don't end up in that strange position of "using petrol or diesel to enable biofuel consumers to avoid using petrol or diesel."   ???

I forgot to address this.  NO!  You cannot run unleaded gas in a diesel.  It will make the engine run like crap and you'll need to drain the tank.  This is why the pump nozzles are different for diesel.  They are also marked green.

Many already do.  You can buy Bio diesel in the Midwest already.

So unless you're talking about a diesel conversion, don't post here.
