Engine swap- AMC 150 I4 T-5 Trans

Would like to swap the 1983 AMC 2.5L inline 4 (I4) engine with a late model Chrysler 4 cyl engine that uses multi-port fuel injection.
 
Are there any links to information on which cars to use and how to do this?

First off, in 1983 Jeep was still using the GM 2.5L, was actually the last year.

Secondly, I'm not sure you want Chrysler 2.5L, I think you're refering to the AMC 2.5L.  The Chrysler 2.5L is a SOHC, TBI engine and isn't that great.

Unfortunately the engine uses a standard GM bellhousing bolt pattern which doesn't bolt up to the AMC 2.5L.  If you want want to swap the AMC engine in you'll pretty much need a complete drivetrain swap.

It is a 1983 CJ7, it does have an AMC 2.5L

I guess my question should be-- Is there a 4 cyl engine that I can just bolt in to replace the AMC 2.5L.

Unless it's been swapped before, you can't have an AMC engine because AMC only introduced the 2.5L in 1984.  If you do have an AMC engine and it's never been swapped (matching VIN) you don't have an '83.

Your best bet for GM 2.5L would be another GM 2.5L out of a F-body or S-10.  I'm pretty sure they'll all be TBI though.  Better than a carb set up, but not as efficient as a multi-port system.

For the AMC engine, your best bet is the 91-95 Jeeps.  In 96 everything went OBDII which isn't very pleasant to get DIYers.

The 4-cyl from 91-95 were AMC 2.5Ls as well.  In 91-95 was when they came with OBDI compliant MPFI.  You could probably just pick up the parts and bolt it up to your engine, but in my opinion would be way more difficult than getting the complete engine with harness and ECU, and just bolt it in.

If you, by any chance, think that OBDI is too complicated to mess with, you can also look for an 87-90 4 cylinder Wrangler YJ.  Those came with a TBI version of the engine.  They're just 5HP down from the MPFI model, but they're also fairly old and won't be at optimum operation conditions.

I'm sure people have done it before, but I haven't seen anything.  If you pick up an FSM matching the year of your engine, it would really help you out.

1984 Production year was the frist  for the AMC 2.5L in the CJ.  So it is possable for a late 1983 to have a 84 engine.  So redcj7 could be correct on his engine.

Look under the hood and see if the intake and exhaust header are on the same side or opposite.  If they are on the same side then it's an AMC and not a Pontiac 151 "Iron Duke".

If you've got a AMC then you should be able to swap a MPFI version into your CJ without having to buy adapters.  You'd need all the emission stuff to make sure it's all kosher.  You'll need to get a electric fuel pump and add it inline with your fuel lines.  You'll probably need to check the pinouts on the bulkhead wireharness so you can get all the gauges and such working.  You might need a electronic speed sensor for the engine to work 100% and not in default mode.  Your best option would be to go with a 1991-1995 2.5L.  These are ODB I so there are less extra stuff needed.  You can find a MPFI 2.5L in any XJ (Cherokee), MJ (Comanche) or YJ (Wrangler).

Otherwise, you'll need to get a bellhousing off of a 1984+ CJ with the 2.5.  I believe they used the same transmission between the two years.  (Need to double check that.)  In any case, it shouldn't be that difficult once you've got all the parts.

I was hoping a 4 cyl Chrysler would work for a donor car.
Guess I will start looking for a 1991-1995 2.5L. XJ (Cherokee), MJ (Comanche) or YJ (Wrangler). to use as a donor

Example of inexpensive donor car found in local paper.
1993 Chrysler LeBaron LE
$995, Light Blue 4-door FWD Sedan, 168363 miles, AUTO 3SPD, 2.5L I4.

Is this the same 2.5L I4 that is used in the 1991-1995 2.5L. XJ (Cherokee), MJ (Comanche) or YJ (Wrangler).
