coils in the front of the YJ

Theres something i've been thinking for some time after seeing some coil convertions for the YJ like the Black Diamond. What if someone keep the rear leafs and just convert to coils in the front? have anyone done this before? And if  so, what are the ups and downs of such a mod? Something in my mind tells me it might be better that way.

I've toyed with the idea of doing this with a HP D44 from a Bronco.  Weld on some brackets for the radius arms and do a track bar

Black Diamond sells their XCL kit in parts. This alows people to do just the front or rear.  It's not cheap though.  Once you go with the kit, you can't really modify it that much.  The lift it produces isn't that tall either.  Not to mention the skidplate is huge and hangs down quite a bit. Don't even bother with the Pro Comp kit.

being around rockcrawling rigs for the last 6 years of my life, i can tell you the the black diamond kit can be modified, in fact, here's a pic of a guy from this weekend who runs 44's on d60's with that kit (mid-roll, of course)

I've talked with him many times and he has over $60k invested in that rig.

You know, Brad Kilby had a TJ that he converted the rear to leafs.  Shaffer's Offroad was prototyping a YJ coil conversion that started at $1500.  Don't know whatever happened to that, but Mike Shaffer was in the top 3 finishers of all the UROC events for the last 3-4 years.  I'd trust his design.

Yes, the Black Diamond can be modified but it takes a lot of work.  The first thing people usually do is flush mount the arms so the skidplate doesn't hang down.  It's not as easy task.  Honestly, if you're going to do that much work you might as well do a mult-link with your own coil-overs.  But then again if someone's asking about out of the box coils/coil-overs, I don't think they're going to be cutting up a $2000 kit right away.

Another  thing to consider though is how driveable the kit would be on road.  It's one thing to make it work offroad but to have it be safe onroad would be a huge liability.

right and with the price of TJ's coming down now you could just buy a TJ and put on a 600 dollar lift.  You would not be spending any more money and would be much more relyable.

Well, I wouldn't go that far.  The TJ's got it's own problems.

Honestly, a SOA would be a inexpensive and comparable option to coil-overs.

or a link suspension, if it's a strictly offroad vehicle.  links offer amazing flex, but hardly any support for onroad driving.   SOA is a good balance between.

and the last time I checked, you can't pick up a used TJ for less than $5k.

I have been considering the same thing. I finaly got a YJ after having a couple XJs and MJs and having built my own long arms for the XJ I can't see why it would be difficult to do on a YJ. And as far as driveability, ride and handleing its hard to match that type of set up. Its something I will be considering over the winter.

There isn't nothing wrong with the procomp kit. I love it. handles great and works just fine for everything ive done.

Although, if it were me, just wanting to coil the front, just make some upper and lower coil mounts, and 4 link it. Ditch your sway bar, but keep your tracbar. You can EASILY make a couple coil mounts out of some pipe.
