Everything I have always had that was smittybuilt was CHEAP  :flush:.  There is a reason that it is inexpensive, its a bargan brand, designed to look good but not very functional.

Everything that Smittybilt made wasn't cheap.  They made a decent bumper and nerf bar set for years.  The problem came when they started to stretch themselves too far in the 2000nds.  Smittybilt was acquired by it's current owner Lund Holding Company, in 1998/99.  It's a bit sad to see the company in this shape.  In the 80's, it was one of the few companies that made aftermarket parts for Jeeps.  (The other company was Con-Ferr).

I have nothing against the Smittybilt winch but it's just another rebranded Chinese winch. The problem is not that they're all crap.  It's that they have very little QC which can make them hit or miss.  If you're using your winch often or even if you don't, you don't want to be stuck someplace, spool out the cable and find that it's not working.

Here are the specs:

Over fifty years of experience and talent in manufacturing heavy duty off-road products now goes into the Smittybilt XRC8 8000lb Winch. Featuring a 4.1 horsepower Permanent Magnetic Motor, and a Planetary Gear System with 265:1 gear ratio, this Smittybilt winch provides all the power and performance you need. For an affordable, reliable winch system with maximum muscle and durability, trust the XRC-8.

From those specs it looks to be similar to the old Ramsey REP8000 which was one of the only winches that used a Permanent Magnet.  The reason for this is that a Permanent magnet requires no power to create an electrical field.  Most of the other Ramsey and winches from Warn and Superwinch use Electro Magnets.  Since it uses less power to run, many budget Jeepers buy them also.  Since it has less strain on the battery/charging system.  The downside is that permanent magnets lose they strength with age.  I would also guess that they are also limited in how much they can pull since I've only seen them up to 8000lbs.

The only budget winch I'd consider is probably the Tabor 9000.  It's not cheap but its a lot of winch for a decent price.  Still, you can find Warn M8000's for under $500 occasionally.  Now if you still can't afford one, then a Chicago Freight/Harbor Freight/MileMarker/Smittybilt is better then no winch.

I agree with Jeffy, the import winches are hit and miss with reliability.  Friend's of mine have had luck with the Harbor Frieght winches.

I'll stick with my good 'ole Warn 8274 that was made in '76 :thumb:

i've read that the hf are repackaging of mile marker. i know a guy who has always said that he prefers hf becuase they are cheaper and just as reliable as any warn or ramsey he has ever owned.
oh... and he's been a deisel mech for over 20 years with his own tow truck and flat beds that he only runs hf on.

Same here, the new 9000/10000lb should be better.

They're all rebadged import winches with minor differences.

I wouldn't be too caught up in line speed unless you're competing or winching most of a group up obstacles.  My 8274 is dangerously fast with a no-load line speed of around 75ft. a minute, speed kills.  Slow is safer when it comes to winching.

My neighbor just got one a few weeks ago and it seems to be pretty solid. Immediately upon arrival we tore it down to nothing to see what this thing was all about and really saw just about nothing to complain about. There was one wire that didn't have a great connection so he fixed that, but it would have probably worked fine the way it was, just not really worth taking the chance. I must say that after seeing it in person I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.  I like most of you would rather have a Warn but I just can't justify spending twice as much on a Warn as I would on the Smittybilt. I've had my Jeep for  almost five years now and I've never HAD to have a winch. I don't ever go wheeling without a comparable/better rig than my own, and I don't stick my Jeep in places I know it shouldn't go.  It seems like three hundred dollars is more than enough for me to spend for something that I may only use once or twice a year. I'll take the money I save and put it towards axles and lockers so I don't need a winch. Haha

if money grew on trees i'd have a new warn 9.5 but since it doesn't....

read up on JF.... chad and I spent some time playing with this thing prior to installation....  overall, it was a great buy in my opinion.  a couple little things here and there, but nothing major and nothing that would keep me from buying another one....
