Old AMC 2.5 build
« on: September 09, 2007, 11:05:19 AM »
I have an '85 jeep cherokee with the amc 2.5 carbureted motor in it.  I just ordered a 32/36 carb for it and i would like to do some performance mods to it.  The only problem i am having is finding parts for the old motor.  Hesco's cam kits list 86 and up.  I tried putting different headers on but the intake doesn't have enough clearence for one to fit.  If any one has any ideas on what I could do to this motor for more power it would be appreciated.

Most of the performance parts for any of the 2.5L's should work.  Although you have the added problem of clearing a tighter space.  Hesco is probably using '86 since I believe that was the first year for the TBI.

One of the biggest bolt-ons you can probably do is to convert your carb over to MPFI with a intake swap.  Should be good for a solid 20hp.  Although it might be easier to just drop a complete OBDI engine in there.

BTW: Performance Distributor makes a GM HEI distributor for the carb'ed 2.5L's.
