Topic: TJ 4Cyl Shifter

Has anyone installed a Ripper Shifter or a Hurst onto their 4Cyl TJ?  If so; How does it improve the shifting?, Is it an easy install?, Is it worth it?  Thanks.

I've got the B&M in my 2000. The shifts are a lot shorter.  If you have more than a 1" BL or have stumpy little arms I would think twice.  I have a 2" BL on mine (which sucks) and the shifter is kind of low.  In addition to changing the pivot point to shorten the throw of the shifter, it is also actually a shorter (heightwise) shifter.  I'm pretty tall so it doesn't bother me, and if I didn't have that stupid body lift the shifter would sit right where I would want it. I found the install to be pretty easy.  The instructions were easy to understand and follow.  All in all though I am quite happy with it. I just think it makes the Jeep a little more fun to drive

Yes, it did, but my shifter had minimal slop before hand. Like I said, I really like the unit. It's very good quality and everything works well.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but adding a body lift makes the shifter shorter?  I have a 1-1/4" body lift being installed on my TJ right now, is the shifter hard to reach?  What about the 4-wheel drive shifter, does it shorten that too?

The transmission shifter is attached to the top of the transmission so any body lift will reduce the distance between the shifter and the floor.  The transfer case shifter is attached to the body, on a TJ, so that shouldn't change.

You can achieve shorter throws one of two ways.  One is to move the fulcrum so the ball end moves further with each shift.  The other way is to reduce the overall length of the shifter.  So you won't have to move as much to engage each gear.  Problem with this is that unless you're sitting on the floor, you will notice that you'll have to reach a bit more.  I've seen some short shifter that had the shifter knob recessed into the center console since it was so short.
