need advice
« on: November 16, 2007, 05:53:09 PM »
i need some advice.  ive been dying to swap a 5 spd into my jeep now for  long time.  now that i finally have a good paying job i can do so.  but after my body lift my 31's look pretty small.  in order to go up to 33's i figure ill need a set of tj flares, and obv. the tires themselves.  my question is shld i do a trans swap now or just get the flares and tires and wait till spring to swap trannies.

you are the only one that can answer that question. First question would be do you want looks or functionality.
Do the tires you have do the job you want them to do. do you have enough power to push the Jeep down the highway, if not bigger tires would be a poor choice. As for the trans what is the motivation for changing it?
Want a stronger trans better gearing or a better crawl ratio. Some of the old 4 speeds have a very good crawl ratio in 1 st like the NP 435 and the Muncie 465. The 435 is very easy to rebuilt and they are both very stout transmissions.going from a 4 speed to a 5 speed just gives you a overdrive no more no less. If you want to get rid of the peugot transmission well if it still works leave it be till it fails

no no no no no i have the crappy 3 spd auto  so it'd be from 3 spd's to 5 big diff and i want to get more gas mileage and be able to hav a convo in my jeep w/o screaming.  and i didnt decide on which tranny yet was kinda thinking ax-15 b/c my buddy has one in his yard i can have needs to be rebuilt but i got a a trans tech at work willing to help me rebuild it. or if not just an ax5 till it blows up. i want functionality, i drove round with  my lift and small tiny 205's for like a year so  i can do it again.  and my 31's are practically new so.

I'd do the transmission swap.  You're going to be jsut as unhappy with it with more lift and larger tires...

i'd do the tranny swap too. i've driven one of those 4cyl/auto yjs and that combo is horrible. you will notice a big difference with a 5spd. additionally, i realize you can get the ax-15 easily, but look around for a heavy duty tranny with a granny gear. it might save you another swap further down the road. i've upgraded, and re-upgraded too many times...this is experience talking! think it through and go big, your purse will thank you later!

Well, it sounds like he's doing this more for onroad them off.  Problem with a granny 4-speed is that it still only gives you a 1:1 final gear which is the same as that 3-speed manual.  I'd either go cheap and install a late model AX-5 or else spend the money and go NV3550.  The NV3550 doesn't have a granny 1st but it's a lot better/stronger then te AX-15.  The only other 5-speed with a granny 1st is the NV4500 which will cost significantly more but also gives you the best of both worlds.  It will also line you up nicely for an engine swap later one.

Don't forget when you get the transmission, you'll also need to get the pedals.  You might also want to swap out the column but that isn't that necessary, it will just look weird. :drink:

Oh another thing, you'll want to swap the axles to get 4.10/4.11 gears.  Better to swap the axles complete then to mess with gears.  You'll still  probably find that you want lower gears with a 5th.

so i changed my mind for the last and final time come summer time im gonna find a cheap 4.0 5 spd prob maybe an auto even, and im gonna swap everything over to it lift everything. my fourbanger will go back to stock.  that is the final plan.  i just found a set of 33's as well so my plan is set in stone...
