Just installed the 24# fuel injectors in the TJ...
« on: November 29, 2007, 05:25:26 PM »
So far so good...

Seems to idle better.  Just took a short test drive, but so far it seems like the power band is a little longer.  I tried shifting by sound where I usually would and it would be around 3000-3300 rpm, now it feels like it pulls harder to 4000 without having that whining/shift me (starving for fuel ) sound...if that makes any sence.

Im going to take it on a 60-70 mile outing tonight and I should know more and will report on that later.

BTW, my '99 TJ only had 60K miles on it and the injectors were filthy.  These 4-hole injectors I got from the local u-pull-it were cleaner than mine.  I read on another forum where some guy put the same injectors in his BMW and it make a world of difference (not to compare Jeeps with BMWs).

Anyway, if anyone is interested in reasearching it, the part number I used is F5DE-B5A.  They are 24# and used in 99-02 Navigator, and many of the Ford Duratec V-6s.

Cool, so you got them, huh?  Keep us updated on how you like them.

yeah, be careful though.  On your write-up on fuel injectors, the ones I got look like the Navigator, all blue one and it has 4 spray orifices.  The 2nd one pictured, the 24# truck injectors, which also go in 94-99 Lincoln Continentals, only have one spray orifice like the stock Jeep injectors.

Funny thing is that I searched the whole Ford section of the yard and didnt find them.  Then I walked up on this fully intact engine that was already pulled and sitting between two other vehicles.  I thought ot myself , "that thing looks high performance", and thats where I found them...in a Duratec V-6....go figure.

Well, once you run those for a while. I'll update the writeup with your info.  The chart was borrowed some someplace else.  Good to know about the injectors though.

For whoever may be interested, heres a brief update after about 70 miles.  Not real technical as I dont have a dyno, but here are my thoughts...

Unless something changes after a few tanks of gas, Im definitely keeping them in.  The Jeep has a deeper, more throaty sound.  I mean it doesnt sound as "twangy" in the higher/shifting rpms.  It definitely idles more smoothly and accelerates stronger.  It seems like it doesnt take as much pedal as it did before, which seems to leave a little more pedal left at higher rpms - if that makes any sence...feels like it pulls harder all the way through.  Its noticable in every gear, but more so in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

For example, I used to shift out of 4th into 5th at about 3000 rpm or around 50 mph because it felt and sounded like it was revving out.  Now, it pulls hard through 3000 in 4th and I shift at about 3800 rpm or around 57-58 mph.  It just feels "stronger"...like it almost 'wants' more of a load on it.  4th feels like much more of a passing gear over 3000 rpm all the way to 4000 and still feels strong, and not like its tapped out.  Its like a broader/longer power band.

I filled it up before I started and Im going to run this tank out, then check mileage and the plugs.  If the plugs dont look too rich, and the mileage doesnt drop way down, then this is definitely a keeper.  Im thinking the plugs should be fine though due to tapping into higher rpms and that keeping them clean...I'll see.  Right now, it feels strong, and more solid.   I like it...

Ill post more results as I get more miles on them...

BTW - My set up is a K&N intake, no cat (like that when I got it 2 yrs ago), Turbo muffler, and 4.56 gears on 33x12.50 BFG A/Ts.

I also found the exhaust sounds deeper.  Mine pops a bit more though.  When I let off the throttle quickly it might pop once or twice.    I haven't see any MPG change.  And I agree the engine isn't struggling as much at the higher RPM's (above 3500).  Please do a follow up in a few weeks.

Another 70 miles today...

Noticed a little spark knock, very little.  When lugging along at 50 mph or so and give it a lot of gas there was a little spark knock.  Ill bump up to 89 octane after this tank and that should fix that.

I also wrapped my intake pipe with industrial boiler pipe tape.  It keeps the intake pipe from heating up over the engine and keeps the incoming air a little cooler.  We used to do it a lot when hopping up atvs...wrapped the exhaust for better flow.  Works pretty well on black steel intake pipes as well.

I may snorkel or Hummer intake tomorrow...

Still a lot more fun to drive like this so far...

I like the red one on Jeep forum better but I also like to lower my windshield.  Although you've got to wonder how practical it really is.  If water is that high then everything else is wet.  Also as you progress forward, water would be coming up over the hood.  I guess you could add a stove pipe to it like the HMMWV's do although I've never seen anyone do that.  They do look cool though.

I think the Hummer intake is more of a CAI than a snorkel.  I just want to get the intake out from under the hood...for a few reasons.  One of which is sometimes when I hit a mud/water hole pretty fast the engine compartment fills up with steam and it sometimes almost kills the engine making it hard to keep momentum and get out...

Thanks for that omnisi.  I've been thinking of a way to do that exact mod (hense the reason I posted in this thread) and those write ups are perfect.

Well, after searching through salvage yards all day trying to find an aire box/canister the K&N would fit in for a snorkel, I finally went home and found it...

...an ammo can! LOL .  Theres that Jarhead coming out in me...

But, it looks like it will work perfectly.  Plenty of room for the filter and an intake hole, and room to swing the lid open to get to the filter... Those things seal TIGHT.

Now, I just have to mount it and put it together... and figure out where to run the pipe so it doesnt interfere with my antenna, mirror movers, or windshield hinge mount lights coming soon....

Update...

After a full tank of gas the mileage is slightly better than before, and thats with the doors off and just a safari top.  Its about 2 mpg better so far.  I filled up with higher octane to fix the occasional spark knock while lugging.  Ill see how she does with the different fuel and the snorkel.  Still feels stronger...I wouldnt reall mind if the mileage was slightly worse...
