Should I Sell?
« on: January 04, 2008, 05:29:24 PM »
I have known for a wile i was going to need to do something about my vehicular-status, as i am about to start my career as an electrician. I have to decide to either get a roof rack and trailer for my jeep or sell her and buy a truck (it would be nice to have a ''hard'' vehicle again). I just don't know what to do, and would not mind some advise from someone out side my family/friends.

It really depends on if you have to use your own tools and if you have a soft top.  I would hate to loose my tools to some opportunist thief in a soft top.  I work commercial construction and I'm lucky enough to keep my tools in a lock box on the site.  I love the Jeep on the jobsite,  I can park any-were (including on top of excavation spoils) and putting the top down after working in the summer is great.  If you travel to several residential jobs everyday then you might want to get a light truck with a cap or a toolbox.  I had a Ford Ranger when I did residential.  If you have minimal tools you can just remove the backseat and use toolboxes or a grip (canvas toolbag).  I say use the Jeep until it becomes a hassle to haul your gear...a couple months as an electrician you should be able to buy a small truck and install a toolbox in the bed and still keep the Jeep.  A roof rack and a trailer would be cool too but I would imagine mpg would suck with weight on it.  I have thought of those trail racks that look like a platform that connects to your trailer hitch and maybe welding on a lockable Knack toolbox.   ???

That would probably work well, just get a locking drawbar pin and you'd be set.

Well i have a soft top half-cab now and doing anything is hassle cause i have my spare tire in the ''bed'', i know i could use the practicality of a truck, but would miss the jeep and friendships that comes with it.
I just can not work out having 3 vehicles with insurance being so much here in Manitoba, I don't think i can even find the room for a trailer

Keep the Jeep and sell the bike!
How many months riding do you get out of the bike?  And $1200 a year for insurance...ouch!

Those are some killer insurance prices.  I pay $137/6 Mo for basic Liability.  $1200 for a bike is crazy even if it's $1200/year.

Well  we have MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) which is owned my the government...  so we all know how that works,  they don't like ''sports cars'',  4X's or bikes, cause i only payed $1100 when i bought it  2 years ago.
oh and there is no other company,  it is MPI or no driving legally at least. don't you love the ''freedom'' of where i live?

Have you considered a small trailer with a job box?  Or do you have to haul 10 ft sections of pipe too?  I've got a couple plumber friends, but they have company vans.

yeah sometimes i have to lay pipe so i don't think i can get away with a short trailer, i might be able to do it with a roof rack but that would be real awkward since some types of pipe weigh about 90lbs per bundle.

Well, if you get a decent roof rack, they should be able to support 300-400lbs.  Pull the rear seat and then you have room for a large tool box.

i have a half-cab right now and my tools barely fit back there, i can't even think about bringing a jenny or heavy duty heater due to the lack of room.
