Cherokee D44 axle upgrade
« on: January 10, 2008, 08:32:26 AM »

Does anyone know if this kit would fit a Cherokee D44 rear axle?

Superior Axle & Gear Super 44 Axle Kit with Detroit Locker for 97-04 Jeep Wrangler TJ

Thanks

Looks like it will.  But for that kind of money you could build and swap in a disc braked 35 spline Dana 60.

Thanks for locating that link.  I'm not actually thinking of doing it for now but just looking into it to get a general idea of parts availability for my D44.  Also, as an option for changing the bolt pattern in case of a front axle upgrade.

Yes and no.  The shafts are the same as well asn much of everything else.  You'll need to get new bearing retainer plates though.  The TJ D44-3 and the XJ D44 are different.  The XJ uses standard D44 flange bolt pattern while the TJ uses the D35's smaller pattern.

Can the ones already on the D44 axle be re-used or are they special for the kit axle shafts?

If you want to go through the hassle of cutting off the old bearings for a $5 part.  If you buy the kit through Drivetrain Direct, you can probably have them change out the retainers.  They are either closely tied to Superior/Foote Axle or are owned by them.

If you really wanted more strength, it would probably be cheaper to buy a 14 Bolt rear then a D60.

Easiest to just get slotted retainers rather than going through the hassle of pressing them on behind the bearings.  Most of the drag stuff uses them, they are plenty strong.  Retainers are cheap anyway.

Thanks.  Looks like I need to get a service manual for the D44 to get a better idea of these parts.

Found this write up.  Looks like Drivetrain Direct is the answer.
