WWJD?
« on: January 14, 2008, 03:15:41 PM »
Say you run into some money, enough money that you will be able to take your Jeep to the next level.  Something around $6-8000.  Here's the catch though. You have to use your own Jeep as the basis for this and you have to include any labor charges that you might incur from having a shop do any work that you cannot.  Not everyone will have labor charges.  Don't know how much labor will cost, then you better leave enough left over.  Engine choices have to be as new or newer then your Jeep and include additional parts required.  Axles can be just about anything within the budget.  Salvaged parts are OK but you must calculate rebuilding costs if there are any.  Tires will depend on your current setup.  If you want larger tires then you'll have to budget for them.  Same goes for lift.  Option 7 & 8 assumes you have done Option 3 or 4.

Post what path and parts you chose.

Combination - Starting/Ending with tires/wheels. Tires/wheels affect everything on your vehicle. Its the start and ending when you mod. To fit tires/wheels, you need suspension lift, body mods, deeper gear ratios, driveline mods. Due to the larger tires, the driver will try to negotiate tougher terrain, so this affects recovery, skid plates, protective plates for the body, roll cage. With all this add in regular maintenance as a cost. Going offroad drastically increases the schedule for the maintenance.

My next big upgrade would be to put in a GM 4.3 and an SM420, this would complete my drivetrain upgrade to a strength level good for me (already have rear Dana 44).  Any money left over would buy an oil pan skid plate and a gas tank skid plate.

I contemplating one of two courses of action, and maybe even both.

-One would be a V-8 swap, but I want to use a 5.2L Mopar engine, or maybe even a 4.7L. If I go with the V-8 swap I'll also need a new tranny and have to modify the T/C input shaft(if not replace)

-The other option I'm really considering is a NV4500 transmission swap and adding a Advance Adapters 4 speed T/C.

I'm thinking the tranny & T/C swap would be the next best modification to my current set up. I can still add a
V-8 later.

2.4l turbo engine, improve the cage, 4:1 low range ARB lockers front and rear. The front one will happen ina couple of months any way. mabey ford 9" hi pinion axles will be fun to built those, Mabey assemble them from some curry parts. 35" tires and that would be pretty much it. It does pretty good as is I am taking more and more tough places and having a ball with my mud puppy needs a bath first though hardly any yellow left .
This pic was at the beginning of the day 40 miles of dirt roads and some hill climbs later my little girl got downright filthy

The first thing that is going to be added is ARB lockers. The front will get installed in a month or so the rear we will see for power a 2.4l turbo will do nicely. Maybe a atlas or a terra low some snazzy axle shafts and as a big maybe 35's and 4.88 gears. Other than that she is pretty much the way I want her to be.

9'' rear, 44 front, both with 5.56. RE long arm upgrade with 5.5'' coils to fit 35's. My ultimate dream would to then be able to fit a nice little 4 bangin cummins under the hood. I would run out of that $ range in a hurry.

I'll give this a little bump.

I keep going back and forth between wanting a larger engine or just doing axles.  Since my current engine is strong, I'll probably look into axles again.  Replace my 30/44 combo with maybe some Volvo 303 axles or maybe some Ford F-350 full-width axles and run negative offset wheels.  The Volvo 303 would be awesome though.  6:1 with 35 or move up to 37's would be sweet.  Then drop in a Atlas 4 or a Stak 3 and it would probably be fine for on and offroad.

The other option is to go a 5.3L or a 6.0L Vortec engine swap with a 4 or 6 speed auto.  But that would require a lot more work and jumping through a few hoops as well.  I'm not sure if I really want to deal with that just yet.  Although a friend of mine is doing a 4.0L swap into his Jeep as we speak.  I'm kinda partial to the 2.5L though.  It's slow but very dependable.

a 3 speed transfer case ( atlas or stack) with a careful gearing choice  should give you a good balance between roadability on and of road. Like a direct and a 20% under drive for the street depending on the axle gearing.
