yesterday i was on E, filled up and only put in 11 gallons (i have a 15 gallon tank). my needle on my gauge moves all the time while im driving. is this normal? does anyone else have this concern or is my sending unit starting to take a crap on me ? thanks for the help in advance

Don't know about the YJ but the TJ is known for showing empty when there is several gallons left in the tank.

Yup, that's normal.

Usually a bad sending unit will go mage the gauge go all the way full.

You need the 15to20 gal. tank conversion, free and easy.

Mine shows full for about 100 miles, then starts droping (I got about anorther 150 midels to go after that happens).  So basically, it shows full for a longer period of time, but that's it.

My gauge has been flaky for several years now.  It used to rise up from E when you put the ignition on ON.  Now it only goes up if the engine's running.  The sender also likes to stick especially after filling up.  It will sit on E for a while.  Sometimes it will go to F after several miles.  The worst is when it's at half a tank and would drop to E all of a sudden then not work, in which case I have to guess how much gas I have.  I usually end up filling up around 220-250miles BUT I know I can run it to 320miles IF I'm not that hard on the engine.  This becomes an issue if it's really windy and I have to drive into the wind.  In which case I usually fill up at 250-275.  I should check and see if the connection on my tank is OK.

I agree the tank conversion is a great freebie.  It is not to hard at all and like mentioned above the only difference is that the gauge stays on full for longer.  Every Jeep I have ever had has had issues with the fuel gauge, they are just not that reliable.

I've got a 91 yj and they do not even make the sending unit any more.  I started haveing probelms about a year ago.  Probably going to custom guage and sending unit.
