Rust elimination Q's & Rocker guard Q's
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:24:28 PM »
What do you guy's use to clean up rust and keep it from comming back? Soon as this cold snap breaks up here I'm going to scuff of the rust and peeling paint from my frame. Was just going to use spray on bed liner, but is there a better option?
This is some of what I'd like to clean up.

I pulled off my warn rocker guards, and I'm getting them blasted and line-Xed, was also thinking about welding a side protection/step on them. Think that would hold up O.K.? Something like this...

My kids have a hard time getting in.

I'd either sand blast or go at it with a wire wheel on a grinder or drill.  You really need to get the dirt out of the frame.  What happens is dirt gets jammed into areas then sits there.  It absorbs moisture and holds it against the metal.  You can use Naval Jelly to help neutralize the rust.  If you can get most of the rust off with the wire wheel, then you can use POR15 or my favorite, Hammerite.  Both will neutralize the rust and put a layer of heavy rust protection coating.  The Hammerite is thinner and looks smoother.  Well, that is if you don't get the Hammered finish.  You could probably alos use Rustolium Professional Black.  It comes in a tall can and is for industrial applications.  Works great though.

Get to the rust now or have holes to deal with later.

As for the rockers, that will work.  It's bee done many times.  You will probably want to have a reenforcement strip on the inside of the rocker panel for added strength.  Kids grow fast though.  Another option would be to use a flip-out step.

One more option on getting kids in.  I always taught mine to climb up the rear tire.  Just stick one foot in the rim, step up and put the next foot on top the tire.  For the rust conversion, I've used both POR-15 and silver Bullet.  Silver Bullet was a better product by far, just make sure the surface is free of oil and it won't ever come off.

Never heard of silver bullet... Any experiance with chassis saver? I'm in the process of pressure washing the entire underneath of the jeep, especially inside and around the frame. Just needs to warm up a little more around here. I was going to da/wizzer wheel the whole frame and floors and coat with something. Just trying to figure out the best and or cheapest way to do it. The jeep is really solid, and has no rot, just a bunch of surface stuff underneath.  Figure this is the year to stop it before she gets bad.
Thanks for the replies guys. How much por-15(or anything else) would you estimate this would take?

O.J. , Where is the best place to get rust bullet? When you used it did you sand all the rust off or just scuff off the big stuff and coat over it? Thanks.

I bought it right off their website: http://www.rustbullet.com/

You just have to scuff off the loose rust and degrease the frame.  If you sand off all the rust then rust converting paints cannot bond to the metal.

Beats having to lift the seat on a YJ.  They're a PITA.

Keep in mind that the worst rust is the one that forms inside the boxed frame rails, and harder to get at.
