Some Good Advice

I figured I should share some knowledge that I learned the hard way about. To make a long story short, I ended up trashing some bearings in my dana 30 because of some water contamination that was more like a lot of water contamination. To stop my ring and pinion form making horrible missalignment noises while up at school, I pulled the axle shafts and plugged the tubes. I took a two hour highway trip back home the other week, only to find my right wheel locking up and running me off the highway. Had to get towed the rest of the way home. So sapposedly your axle shafts hold your wheel bearings together, which I did not know before. So if you have to take out an axle shaft, be sure to have stub ends to stick in your wheel bearings, or don't do this at all. Here are some carnage pics:
 
My break disk ended up being the only thing holding the wheel on, and it ruined the caliper when it locked up.

didn't a family die in a jeep accident because of something like this a few months ago... glad to hear no one got hurt... except for the jeep..

Yup, or carry a 2wd unit bearing with you for times like this.  The 2wd unit bearing has a small stub with a cover built into the unit bearing.

Not exactly...if you are talking about the folks coming back from Attica up to here in West MI...flat towing the jeep...locked up, flip around smashing into their tow rig hurting the wife in the passenger seat and two kids in the back...but they are okay. 
2009 Audi S5....what....its 4wd...sort of....

I am not sure if this link will work or if you have to be a registered user of  naxja to view it but last august a guy was leaving the badlands (he was about 12 miles outside of attica) and his rubi rolled because his hub bearing came apart after removing the shaft, killed him and injured his father.

You're lucky, very lucky.

There are been deaths from people pulling the stub shaft on their D30's.  Some close calls too...

Always keep the stub shaft in the wheel bearing.

That was one of two a couple weeks apart, another guy got killed on HWY41 on his way home from Attica. Jeep rolled when the unit bearing fell apart.

So will the stub shaft stay in on its own?  Can't you just pull the broken pieces of the shaft out and reinsert the shaft to limp home on a D30?

In fact, you do not have to remove the stub shaft to remove the hub/bearing assembly.  Just take apart the u-joint, leaving the stub shaft in the hub.
