Wierd Stalling problem...

I had the strangest thing happen to me today. I was on my way back down from 4x4ing up 4peaks here in Az and my engine felt like it was starting to stall around 2k rps in 4th gear.   I down shifted to 3rd and the rps went up to around 3k and the problem went away, so I switched back to 4th and it started sputtering and acting like it was going to stall. The hole time I was around 50mph. It was about 100 mile long drive home and it would come and go.  After I got into the city, it went away and i have not had that problem since. What could cause a problem like this?

darn no edit, this only happend when i pressed  on the gass when it was around 2k rps...

It is possible that the problem is the fuel pump that it cannot keep addecuate fuel pressure to keep the higher gear with more load...  It happened to me, and it just got worse with time until I changed the pump.  It would also get worse on hotter days.

But it could also be something simpler, I guess...

that is what i was thinking, that it was the fuel pump. I just don't want it to be something so expensive :P  I think i might still have a warranty on it though so hopefully that will cover it.

Do they use winter gasoline there? that or large change in altitude.

I agree, this sounds like a fuel problem.  If you can get your hands on a fuel pressure gauge, check the pressure on the fuel rail with the engine running to see if it's within spec.  Disconnect the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator (simulating a load), and the pressure should go up.  I don't know the exact specs for your model, maybe someone can provide.

You can also check the flow rate by disconnecting the fuel supply line and pumping fuel into a container of known volume.  Measure the time it takes to fill and you can calculate Gallons per Minute and compare to specs.  Below spec flow rates indicate a bad pump or clogged filter.

If it was acting like it was going to stall, then maybe it stored a CEL code.

Well I took it in and it was still under warranty! Turns out that a spark plug was loose and the wire was rubbing on something on the block and it was arking to the block via the wire and the plug.  Everything is fixed now and running smooth.  So basically i was running on 3 cyl sometimes haha.
