gear pattern check
« on: June 05, 2008, 02:10:33 PM »
so yes i am new to setting up gears and i decided to give it a shot. please give me your opinions on this pattern and whether you would run this set up or not. Also, im sure it isnt "perfect" but is it at least an acceptable pattern. I really dont want to tear this thing down again!
This is an xj dana 44 rear with an arb and yukon 4.88 new gears.
pinion preload is set at 17 inch pounds (according to yukons install manual 16-19 is okay)
backlash is .007-.008 throughout the gear runout. (again yukon specifies btwn .006-.010)
hope the pics arent too blurry as my camera is not the best.
thanks in advance.

Not many here have done their own gears.  The picts are a bit blury.  I can't tell if the pinion looks a bit too shallow or not.

Try switching your camera to macro mode.  The icon usually looks like a flower.  Otherwise, bring the camera back, away from the gears and then zoom in.

Gears don't have to be 100% prefect, close enough is good but you don't want to run the pinion too shallow, or you risk breaking them under stress.

Actually I saw your post on POR.  I agree, the second time looks good.  You're more likely to screw it up then to get it any better.

Thanks Jeffy,
Ill give it a go. Working on the ax 15 swap as well as sye at the same time. axle will go in at the same time so i can get my driveline angles measured. I must say Jeffy is the reason i am installing the xj dana 44. read his writeup on 4x4wire.com several years ago and it got my interest. Just now finally accumualted enough money, parts, and experience to complete it.
