33" tire on stock YJ carrier
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:38:21 PM »

Does anyone know if a 33" tire on the stock YJ carrier will allow the hardtop rear window to open (tailgate fully open of course!)?  It slips past my 30" spare with some room to spare but not too much.

Thanks

It will fit if there isn't a bumper in the way.  I also highly recommend extending the bumpstops on the tailgate so the tire isn't rattling.  The vibrations is what kills the tailgate.

BTW:  I have a 34x9.5R15 Swamper and 15x8 steel wheel hanging off mine since '03.

I couldn't get a 31" BFG all terrain to fit and still be able to open the hard top rear window and what not.  I'm running my soft top for now but plans for a tire carrier are in the mix.  I just want the weight off the tail gate and have rear recovery.

Are you running a CJ hardtop or something?

Take the tire stop off the body.  That should give you a bit more room.  Want more, then install flush rear tail lights.

Thanks for the ideas.  I guess shortening the tire bump stop would be the first thing to try.
