Topic: Speed sensor?

I replaced the speed sensor at the transfer case with a new one from the dealer.  My speedo has never worked and the computer always gives the code for the sensor...one of those things I've been meaning to fix since I bought my jeep.

94 YJ, 5 speed.  91 engine and computer.  I bought a sensor for a 94 because the TC is original.  I pulled the gear out of the TC and it looks fine...no sign of wear.
It still doesn't work!   When I clear the codes, I check again right away before even driving it, just start it, shut it down and check the codes again...code still there and no life from the speedo when I drive it after that.

Could the problem be in the speedo unit and cause the computer to not see it?  Wiring harness looks fine but I haven't actually tested for continuity yet.  Just wondering first if the speedo is independent of the computer wiring for that sensor.

Did you index the VSS housing to make sure it's contacting the gear?

I put it back in the way it came out. The number on the side of the gear housing corresponds with the number of teeth on the gear.  Is there a procedure besides that?

That's how it's normally done.  Although I'd double check to make sure the clip is in the right slot.  If it is indeed working then you'll want to trade the VVS wires back to the computer to make sure they're OK.

You have to spin the speed sensor until the correct number range is indexed with the nub cast into the tailshaft housing hole at the 6o'clock position.  Other than that, trace the wires.

Are you using the '91 computer or '94 computer?
