swap just transmission or both tranny and engine
« on: September 04, 2008, 05:02:16 PM »
Hey guys, I just want to drain some brains for info if I can.
My transmission is pooched, and since I plan to go to an AX-15 this winter anyways, I dont want to have mine rebuilt.

I might have found a used engine and transmission as a pair already mated.

Would it be easier for me to just drop my current tranny, and replace with the new-to-me one? Or would I be better off to pull my engine and tranny, and replace with both new-to-me tranny and engine?

Im thinking if I swap engines as well, I really dont know condition about the new engine, besides it was in running condition when removed. My engine is starting to puff blue however, and plan on a rebuild this winter anyways. Only thing really holding me back from swapping both is little electrical gremlins that may creep up on me.

Opinions? And possible write ups?

Are you considering replacing your engine with a similar engine?  Or upgrading?

What year jeep you talking about?

1995 YJ
I will be keeping the same engine, the 2.5L

donor vehicle is a 94 YJ, 2.5L AX-5. I won't have the wiring harness/computer for the donor though.

Thanks

if your engine is fine then why not just swap in the transmission?  If you really want to swap everything then it should work with no changes.  Basically everything should be carry over.

thanks Jeffy.
Ive never replaced driveline components on a 4x4, or lifted vehicle. So would it be easier to just drop the tranny, or pull both?

If you want to swap the transmission by itself, then drop the trasnmission with the transfer case out from under it.

If you want to go whole hog then you might as well take the front grill and radiator out and take the whole thing out that way.  MAJOR PITA if all you're wanting to really do is change the transmission.

Alright, I figured it would be easiest to drop from the bottom, then take out from the top. Ive just never had the luxury of a hoist or lifted vehicle.

Anything I should be doing while I have the tranny/t-case out?

Im thinking maybe SYE, and new clutch (depending on wear, but almost seems worth it reguardless).

Unless you have your suspension done as in it's final height, I wouldn't mess with a SYE.
