Wipers don't park when turned off
« on: October 07, 2008, 12:57:07 PM »
Quick question.  I failed my PA state inspection a few days ago because my windshield wipers don't "park" when they're shut off.  Meaning that they don't go back to the "rest" position.  Mine just stop wherever they are when I turn them off.  My question is this.  On an 87 YJ, are they supposed to go to the rest position, or do I have a problem?  Just trying to figure out if this is how the wipers functioned from day1, or if there is a malfunction.

Thanks,.......sm

They don't park on my '95 either.  I always thought it was normal for the YJ.

There should be a park ppsition switch on the wiper motor that gets direct ignition voltage when ever the key is on. Either no power to this switch or the switch failed or is stuck open

Something must be wrong with the switch.  My '92 parks fine.  Actually every YJ should park.  If you drop the windshield, to gain access to the wiper motor, you should see that it uses 3 wires.  IIRC, two are hot one is ground.  One of the hot will run the wipers normally.  The second hot will run them one cycle then park.

My motor is gettin slow but it parks still.

Try lubing the joints; mine were doing the same, and I did not lube the joints until AFTER the ball-joint on the motor tore off.  Lubing it will save you from having to weld the thing back up!
