35's and no lift...
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:40:18 PM »
Saw this why browsing Gen-Rights website.  I like AEV's highhood but they will never come out with one for the YJ.  I noticed Gen-Right has this though.  I'm not too keen on cutting my hood like that.  I do like the fender vents.

I like the vents also...  As well as the advantage of high clearance with low CG.

It sure looks cool.  I imagine freeway driveability will be easier then if it had a 4 or 6 in lift.

What would be the benefit of having this set up vs. 4in lift and 35's?????

Lower CG is the biggest advantage.  When Rockcrawling, gravity works against you when you build up.  The downside is that everything is still lower to the ground.  Ground clearance under teh axles would be the same either way but the frame is going to be that much lower which is why it would be a good idea to add skidplates and try to raise things up.

Add a belly-up skid and you increase the breakover to what you would have with a 3" or 4" lift kit.  Then it'd be set.

Even with a no-lift suspension running the 35's, I would still want articulating arms and a suspension system to handle the droop and compression. With the heavier and wider tires/wheels, you will need to change the shocks to compensate. If you build or put together something like this for the 35's, adding stiffer stock length shocks is just making it a mall crawler. With the low static suspension height (distance between axles and frame), I would design locations for the shocks to where I could get a longer traveling shock to take advantage of the 35's. With the short arms, you really don't need long travel shocks as that would make the axles walk under the Jeep when climbing obstacles. That is why you would still need a suspension system. The system would be designed to handle the long travel shocks as well as the control arms provide good articulation and geometry.

However, I believe the TJ's design (frame and driveline) limits a suspension system to function properly. Thus a minimal amount of lift is required. In the suspension system, the compression is the limiting factor. You can only clear so much from underneath the body and frame of the TJ using the stock TJ suspension locations.

But, I recently found that RockKrawler provides an articulating upper rear link. It is designed to install in the stock upper frame mounts of the TJ, connect to a bridge over the rear diff, and have clearance for the stock muffler and tail pipe. This eliminates the rear track bar as well.

In review of the product, I was concerned about the side loading of the axle. Any side forces would affect the arms and since they are bent like a 'L' with no inner support, would they bend easy. This guy has it installed on a LJ in New Mexico. He hasn't had any ill-effects with the suspension system. I like the design layout as I need to keep my space opposite of the muffler due to an air tank and would prefer not to do more exhaust work. I need to change my rear shocks and I wanted to get longer travel out of the rear axle. I want to lengthen the Tera arms, relocate the shock to behind the axle and tie into the outer frame area, and want to eliminate the rear track bar. This product may be the design and answer.

Have any more pics/specs of this rig?  I like the idea, and this looks like a nicely done rig.

Does anybody make a front coil conversion anymore for the YJ?

Before my '95 YJ was lifted, the front differential would come in contact with the lower radiator hose when the suspension was compresed (even with sway bar connected).  The hose was stock and was installed correctly and didn't hang down in any strange way.  I think this is a design defect of the YJ.  For this reason alone it is worth lifting a YJ.  This kit looks like a great way to fit something like 37s with about 2.5 inches of lift.

I love to build a YJ like this:

Gen Right kit
RE extreme duty 2.5 inch lift
Dana 60s front and rear 5.86 gears
37" Super Swampers
V8
SM420
Atlas TC
'95 YJ, 33 x 12.5 mud tires, RE 4.5 ED lift, Atlas 4 speed, rear D44, ARBs front and rear, 4.56 gears, 8000# winch

On most rockcrawlers you have maybe 4-6" of uptravel.  Most of your suspension travel is down.  Likd I said before I'd replace the control arms.  You could even do a multi-link and with coil-overs you could have the same stance with a HUGE amount of down travel.  (Think Trophy Truck).

With the transfer case raised, and skids for the oil pan and gas tank, you'd probably have better control on off-camber then a lifted Jeep.

Like Jeffy said, it's all about the droop, much more so than compression.
