some tranny questions!! please help!
« on: November 08, 2008, 10:32:00 PM »
 :asshat:
i was wondering, i have a 95 wrangler, w/the 2.5 and AX5, i was wondering (the jeeps not with me right now) if the tranny has an external or internal slave cylinder?  im doing a tranny swap (AX15) with an AA adapter plate, and need to know which one to get- an external slave or internal.  also, if i wanted to do it on the "cheap", i could use a 96-00 dakota bellhousing, but what else would i need?  a full list would be great!  i have a 93 AX15 to swap in.  Thanks again!   :beers:

I think they changed in 93 or 92 to external.  Anyway, mine is '94 and it's external, so your should be as well.

The '95 YJ will have an exteral slave.

Using the Dakota bell housing works, but the slave/throughout arm is a litle off I corrected this by running a nut behind the pivot point bolt and removing the plastic spacer off the slave, while this does ork it gives it a little vagueness to the clutch feel.  This is what I used when I swapped the NV3550 into my '95, I spent a year reading all the info out there on swapping trannies in Jeeps before deciding to do this and everyone talks about the bellhousing working but no-one I could find addressed the isses I had with the length of the bellhousing, so YMMV.

I forgot where I saw it, but some guy fabbed his own slave cylinder out of metal parts as the plastic one is a POS.  I think I might try to find this article when the time comes to swap out my stuff.

Actually early pre-87 XJ's had external slaves.  Only in 1987 did they start with the internal on the YJ's.  This ended in 1994 after Chrysler had supply issues with the slaves.  They were defective and they knew it but did not put out a TSB.  1993 was a band-aid fix with a different internal setup that is exclusive to 1993's.
