Well, my B-Day is just around the corner, so I got myself a nice little present: an ARB Safari Snorkel for my YJ!  I can't wait to get it on the Jeep! 







After this, I only got to get me the Shrock Works Rock Hammer Front Bumper (Christmas?) which includes the steering box skid, the Superwinch EP9.0 winch (I like the EPi 9.0, but I think it may cut the airflow to the radiator a bit too much for hot days), the BFG 33" KM2's (5 of them to include the spare, which means one new wheel as well), and some rock sliders (undecided yet which one), and the Jeep will be ready! (although I am sure by the time I get all this - or even before that - there will be more items added to the list!).

Slowly but surely, this thing is coming together!

I don't think any Jeep is totaly done. There is always more thing to do.

I wouldn't mind having a snorkel but they just don't survive the trees around here. Still want to do the Hummer snorkel on the cowl someday if I can find one.

Those look nice, but in my opinion, they are more than a CAI than a snorkel, as it really does not raise the intake all that much, and sometimes the wake will go over the hood, whereas under the hood there will be some kind of bubble (especially if you wrap the front of the jeep with a tarp or something).  Of course, you can always use take the dome off and hook a hose to the top of the jeep, which would make it a true snorkel...

A removable snorkle through the dash to the interior of the Jeep would be good.  I don't have a radio so would slip it through that hole. Then attach it only when doing river fording. Also, consider that a snorkel is not always enough. Here is a good picture from a recently organized trip I did not attend.  This XJ is now getting the tranny fixed.

Completely agree; most people think a snokel makes the Jeep a submarine, but you still got to worry about ignition and electronics.  It does reduce the risk of blowing out the engine due to hydro lock, though, and improves your ods of getting through a river like the one in the video (which is actually a shot from Panama; if I were to cross it, I would feel much safer with a snorkel than doing it like the guy does in the vid!):

This is another sample, this one is '94 YJ (same body and color as mine, but this is a Sahara edition with the 4.0L) from a friend of mine with the safari snorkel (and yes, he's using 2WD because he bet another guy he could get through the river without 4WD; not a smart bet, if you ask me, but he won it).

Regarding the dash idea, I rather have the intake up higher than the dash; if you are moving forward, the dash is fine, but if you get stuck, the water level could theoretically rise and flood the engine.  It IS a better position than stock, though, as the nose dips into the water during the approach, and this setup would avoid that, and also while moving forward, the cabin would flood much slower than the engine compartmet, giving you time to shut the engine off if you do get stuck, but I still think having the intake as high as the roof is better (although if you DO flood the cabin all the way up to the dash, you got other things to worry about as well!).

Well, you could run it up to roof level inside the Jeep too.  It is kind of extreme, especially if you want the interior to look decent.  Some people also move their computers inside, sometimes up by the roll cage.

Another thing about the XJ picture.  The XJ got stuck due to lack of traction but the engine did not suck in water even with water up to the windows and over the hood.  It really amazes me how well Jeeps actually work in water.  Better safe than sorry in any case.

It's never enough if you really plan on getting wet.  You need to seal off your distributor, run breathers or extend breathers for everything.  Everything electronic will need to be sealed off some how.  Not to mention axle seals, transmission seals and tranfer case seals.  Actually probably the best way to get around that is to add positive pressure.  IIRC, several years back there was a Jeep expedition that went to South America, driving.  It was one Wrangler and two XJ's, all white.  It was featured in Peterson's or Fourwheeler back in the 90's.  They did the positive pressure as well as had everything sealed.  Was really cool.

So the snorkel is the least of your worries.

In the case of the axles, you can just change the fluid after you are done playing...  Not ideal, but it works.  Of course, positive pressure would work better, but changing fluids is much less work!  Anyway, I do plan on crossing a few rivers (like the 2 Panama videos shown on the 3rd post, so I have to use a lot of dielectric grease and try to seal all the electronics and connections as best as possible.
