Slave Cylinder leak
« on: November 26, 2005, 08:17:18 PM »
Hi all,

Just found this site.  I have a 91 YJ, 2.5, 175,000 miles. I bought it new in 90. I have replaced the slave  3 times and it is leaking again.

Help me ..... is there a fix.

You can always swap to a earlier or later model bellhousing and external slave.  XJ's from 1984-87 (might be longer) have external slaves.  The AX-5 on the YJ didn't get an external slave till 1994.

Thx's Jeffy, I will look about for another bell housing.  Do you know if the trans behind the 4.0 will swap over?  I have a 94 doner Jeep on the way to the house.  Big Engine fire.  It has a hard top and some other things I am interested in.  Its the 6 with a 5 speed.

You will need a bellhousing from a Dodge Dakota 2.5L.  They used the 2.5L and the AX-15. You will also need to swap the input shaft for the transfer case from 21 to 23 spline but you can take it from the donor.

I have done the AX5 to AX15 swap myself and I am actually getting all the parts together as I write to do another swap on my Dad's Jeep. It is fairly easy and well worth the upgrade if you plan to keep your Jeep for a while.

I learned how to do the conversion from the original guy that figured it out here on Pirate 4x4

Jeremy is a nice and guy and I am actually buying the conversion he originally did on his 2.5L for my Dad's Jeep.

An extensive parts list and pictures would be appreciated, jwrape. :D

One thing that I wonder about is why go with the AX-15 when you can do a NV3550 and have enough strength for a 5.2L.  I'm pretty sure no one had done one yet but I've seen a few AX-15 to NV3550 swaps.  Uses the same bellhousing too.
