got Lincoln MKVIII fan - need swithed source in engine bay
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:50:10 AM »
Hey people,

Just picked up my Lincoln MKVIII radiator fan from junkyard.  I will be purchasing the relay and thermostat/sensor soon.  I have been pouring through search engines and different sites, trying to find a good place in the engine bay to tap an ignition switch source.

Is there a chance to find it in the engine bay or should i just drill another stupid hole in firewall and go to the fuse box?  If anyone has an answer for engine bay or fuse box, can you show me where to look?  IE, pictures are welcome :).

Yes i can solder and prefer that as my means for electrical connections.

Here is a link: http://4bangerjp.com/forums/index.php?topic=3781.0    Also you might need a high output alternator 100 amps + You can find them on ebay for around $150.00. The way I was going to go about was to run a wire to the fuse box, And add a extension to the Copper peace that is on the side of the fuse box. Maybe some one here has a better idea.

I need to get the alternator and still make some brackets for the fan. I just installed some 24# injectors this morning. That was a kick in the pants this  is for the turbo build up but that's another thread.

Needing a high amp alt. will depend on the Jeep.  YJ's come with weak 75amp alts. standard.  TJ's have higher amp alternators.

As for wiring, I have mine running to the fuse box under the dash.  The easiest way to do this is to drill a hole through the big grommet that the throttle cable passes though.  This will keep any additional holes to a minimum.  I ran a use tap off one of the keyed accessories since it's low amp draw (as long as you use a proper relay) it shouldn't be an issue.  I still need to add a switch to turn the fan off completely though.  Since I don't have a thermostat installed, yet, I need a way to turn the fan off.  My Jeep takes twice as long to warm up as it did before.

thanks guys for the comment.  i figured i would be going to fuse box.  I will be installing an LED to be powered along with the fan at slow speed, just so i know it is on.  and unlike you jeffy, i will be buying the thermo switch before i install the fan, cause i dont like my jeep when i cold this time of year :)

i been looking at alternators, i got three i can get in a local yard for less than 50 bucks! thanks for the help.  can you guys point me to whwere in the fuse box i can get a known ignition circuit?  any spaces to add fuses??

If you're using a relay, then you don't need a fuse at the fusebox.  It's not drawing high amps.  I have a fuse tap off an accessory fuse.

well i was saying abuot the additional space for a fuse, just so i wouldnt HAVE to solder to a assesory tap, wasnt sure which was easier,

but just find a fused tap and strip and solder?

10-4! thanks!
