2.5 Chip Mod

Yet another newbie to the world of 4Banger Jeepdom.....
Made the mistake of buying an '04 liberty thinking that that'd qualify as a Jeep fan, but was unpleasantly amused by the lack of Jeepness I felt......
At any rate, I just bought a '94 YJ with a 2.5 and 5 spd....... THIS IS GREAT!!! I GET A TOY AND A DAILY DRIVER in one fell swoop!!!! Just don't tell the wife about the "TOY" aspect....right?

So where do I start? I read through a bunch of posts here and found reference to a power chip for the 2.5.....as being used to driving a Hemi and the 335 hp it lovingly gives me when I stomp it, MORE POWER is up my alley, I'd like to hear some input as to whether these chip mods actually work....

ANY input would be helpful

Well, as Gomer Pyle would say....suuuuuupriise....suuuuuupriise....suuuuuupriise!!!! .....I can't find it on the web again....
BUT.... I have heard that a Jet chip isn't worth the silicon it's coupled with....
That said, I'm looking for ideas on how to increase mid-range grunt... I've seen the suggestions of using a 4.0 TBI unit, but not sure it's feasible / worth it....

31x10.5.15 (just bought and shoe'd with these- had 225/75-15's)
No lift (yet)
AX5
And looking for an inexpensive HT

Looking forward to a long-term relationship...(much to chagrin of wife!!!!!!!!)

There are no chips available for the YJ's.  The closest thing would be the Venom 400.  Probably better to just bite the bullet and get a piggyback or stand alone system.

Please 'splain  piggyback / standalone sys you refer to.....

I swear I saw a stage 1 and a stage II ecm chip for the 2.5 on the web somewhere on the web (but I was at work....tsk-tsk and didn't save the link)

I realize the 2.5 is going to be anemic compared to the 5.7 hemi in my 'Dango. but still looking forthe "easy mods" to make this bearable......

From what I read, a 4.0 I6 swap can be painful.....

4.0 TB, not TBI... 4.0's never had TBI, haha...

anyways, best thing I could say for it would be a CAM, with an aftermarket header (if you want to pay an arm and a leg), 4.0 tb, electric fan, and a more open intake.

Just respect the little engine and she'll make you happy. Once you lift it, get bigger tires, and regear, you'll go more places than you ever thought a 150 ft/lb engine could take you! It'll last forever (if you're nice and give it regular changes, obey your maintenance schedule!), to boot!

Oh, and a piggyback or standalone is a system that either a) alters signals to the ECU to allow customization by you, or b) acts AS the ECU, having its' own wiring harness, etc, and allows you complete customization. Both will cost quite a bit...

IMO the best way to feel like you have more power  is to have the proper gear ratio's to handle what ever size tire you are running (31's in your case). You can build the snot out the motor but without the right gearing to let it run in the RPM band you need it won't be as noticeable.

Oh yeah, didn't see that you had 31's... yeah you'll definately feel those things! Regear to 4.56:1 if you plan to stay under 32, but 4.88's would definately help you feel some take off (but kill long distance driving, I doubt that highway miles on the YJ are important to you anyways).

With proper gearing the driveability should be better all around.  If you're lugging the engine on the highways now, then your mileage should change very little is at all with proper gearing.  The engine should be working within the power band and not have to stress.

I have 31" on my 2.5 and the original gear ratio 4:10.
recently done the upgrade with a hi flow TB and a TBspacer, this was worth while doing it. costs where something of 150 dollar but I'm sure in you find cheaper once second hand on E bay in the US. (it's not a common part in Europe to find..)
so far my experience, upgrade to a 4.0 TB is a great improvement

to be more on topic, i also bought an adjustable MAP sensor. I think this mod falls under 'piggyback'?
although i did not installed it yet. wanna see the effect of the TB first so I'll be able afterwards to evaluate the effect of the MAP adjuster.

Thanks for all the input.....

As it turns out, I did a thorough underhood check yesterday, and guess what?  Plugs were gapped at an average of .045 instead of the required .035.

Not exactly Hemi power now, but the drive in today was MUCH more livable - a lot less rowing between 3rd & 4th going up hills, and I was actually able to use 5th for some length of time.....

On another note, a metallic sheetmetal brrrrapppp I thought for certain was the heat shield on the cat was actually the hood support rod vibrating like crazy when I hit bumps......a little tweak on the support that it hinges upward in fixed it....

Thanks for the advice, all. It's more livable already and I can't wait to get on the modification train!!! :clap:

BOTH!  YJ's do not have any 'chips' available BUT TJ's do.  YJ and TJ PCM's are not interchangeable so neither are the chips.

Exaclty; remember, YJ's are OBDI and TJ (as well as other '96+ cars imported to the US) are OBDII...
