Buying today CJ, TJ, YJ, JK?
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:15:23 PM »
If you were going out today to buy a "new" rig what would buy and why? I'm leaning toward a TJ as I've owned three of them since 2k and really liked them ,but, I have not driven the New Jeep yet.

I would be getting a loan so keep in mind it would have to be something the bank would loan on.

I kinda like the Rubis, Saharas, and the Willy's edition, but, I would not mind another SE auto...

I also like the idea of the new modular hardtop on the JK... any thoughts on that?

I'm not buying immediately ,but, I like to think about it so the next one I get I'll be happy with and keep for a looong time.  ;)

Depends on what you're going to do with it.
JK - great for the road, awfull expensive to be tearing up on the trail.
TJ - good on the road, good offroad - expensive to put much of a lift on, expensive to swap axles
YJ - ok on the road, good offroad - cheap to lift and swap axles on.

The clowns'? Oh, yeah, the clowns. We fight them too — entire armies, spilling out of Volkswagons. We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending 'em in!
94 YJ - gone
98 ZJ - sons truck
97 TJ - daughters project

the way i see it jk is basically on road only cuz the $$$.. tj is good all around new enough that rust shouldn't be to bad and can get spacers for a cheap lift... yj's are good and cheap for off road, leafs make on road a bit rougher than coils but its a jeep.

Honestly, I'd go with a TJ since they are pretty cheap now and in decent condition.  Not to mention there are a lot of parts available.

Still, you've already had what, three TJ's already?  Maybe it's time for a YJ or move up to a JK.

Yeah 3 TJSEs...I'd like a nice clean YJ Sahara ,but, they are Hard to find in my part of the country without a ton of rust. I'm just not sure I like the look of the new JK... I dunno I'm open to suggestions.

NEone know what kind of fuel mileage the JK is getting?

I think the best option would be to look for a TJ Rubicon or Unlimited Rubicon.  No need to really add much to it...  I'm not too keen on JK's since they're a lot bigger but if I was looking for something more comfortable, that's what I'd go for.  The dash is nice and so are the seats.  The extra room is also nice.

A YJ Sport/Sahara would be a good place to look.  1992-5.5.  Really though, as long as the frame is OK, you can usually cover or replace body panels with rocker guards/fenders.

thing with the jk is it seams really dogish to me.. not as bad as my 2.5l but for a v6 it is pretty gutless (minivan motor) got 20mpg driving from Canadian boarder to Minneapolis for deer hunting ( think we had a slight tail wind)

If this was me, and from what you have to do financially, I'd buy something that I can use on and offroad with slightly less cash output. The offroad trails would be hand picked because of the amount of loan and potential damage. You can quickly mod all models to handle better. The newer, the better resale if that is in the short term (5-7 yrs) goal (reflecting on owning 3 97s). Remember, you won't get what you put into it back, but what you put into it will better serve your immediate needs.

JKs are much wider than the TJ/YJ. They come better suited for a street/offroad blend. Larger tires are easily handled stock or with slight lift. More suspension options are available as well. Engine and trans will be covered by warranty for some time. Dealerships are handing out deals to move vehicles off their lots. If you can take the full burden of a $25k new vehicle loan, then I'd say JK Rubicon 4dr convt/hdtop. Add self fab or cheap cost protection and have fun.

As the model year gets older, the loan amount gets smaller as well as higher in rate. Loan is also dependent on you. Time to pay it off should be in alignment with ownership length of less than 5 yrs. You drive the vehicle off the lot and it has taken a drop in resale immediately.

Each model has its + and - and you've experienced the TJ side several times. The YJs are a tad roomier inside up front due to the flat dash. But its more a utility than the TJ.

97 SE - Rubbered and locked for fun
94 SE - stock, collecting parts for 37s

Collins Brothers is nice place to look but most of their stuff is overpriced for what it is.

Actually, if I was in the market to buy another 4x4, I'd probably go with a Toyota FJ60 or maybe a Early Bronco.  There are a few nice ones around my neighborhood.

I'd go with the TJ Unlimited if I were in the market.  But then again I wouldn't be able to wheel it like I do my YJ ???
