Topic: warn m8000 wiring

ok so i know it should be simple with the wiring diagrams but i am stumped.... I got everything figured out except for the small black wire labeled "motor ground" which is soposed to go (according to the wiring diagram) from the solenoid box (where it comes from) to the ground stud on the bottom of the winch motor where the main ground cable from the battery connects... ok that's simple enough except for the fact that the wire is 2 inches too short... so after trying to see if i was doing something stupid i noticed that all the pics I see online show that cable going straight down from the seloniod box rather than angling over to the motor side.... so i figured i would ask for advise first before i fry a new winch.

Call Warn - they are always happy to help on the phone.  In the picture, I doubt that wire is even hooked up.

One more comment.  I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually mount the solonoid box like warn pictures it.  Usually you see it installed facing up over the top of the motor.  Keeps it down out of the way.

i was planing on mounting it how it was pictured since the warn mount plate came with the mount for it... seems weird that they would sell something that wont work without modification.. ill have to give them a call when i get home...

Motor Ground is a ground...

Funny thing is you can't really mount the M8000 like in the picture.  One of the cables for the solenoid box is too short to reach so the solenoid sits crocked on the support.

Plus you bend the crap out of it the first time you walk by and snap your sleeve on it.  If it were mine, I'd toss the cables they gave you - make some longer ones and put the solonoid box under the hood.  Helps keep all the crap out of it, especially in MN

Actually, I tossed my cables and made my own out of #2 welding cable for the three cables that go from the solenoid box to the motor.  I have my solenoid box zip-tied to the grill support since I never made a proper mount.  Although, it's been there for years without any problems.  Cables go over to support so they take all of the pressure off the box.  I did leave the two long cables that go to the battery though.

IIRC, the main cables to the battery are #2 and the ones going to the solenoid are #4.

i was thinking about going under the hood... but when you need the winch how do you get the cable for the controller routed from under the hood to in the cab without crushing it...  and it isn't my dd so i usually don't drive it in the winter to avoid that salt that likes to kill metal....

Well, I'm not sure about having to crawl under the hood.  The hood does not close perfectly so there is a gap.  Feeding the remote through isn't an issue.  I'd also consider doing a dash setup as well.  I've got all of the parts but haven't had the time to build a harness.

My M8000 is mounted like in the Warn PIC. I took off the plastic frame rail gaurd thingy and drilled a hole in the body mount bracket and attached the ground wire there. Has worked fine.
I also would like to put the control box under the hood but have not gotten around to it yet.
I did add the remote switch on the dash. It works great and is easy to do.

Mounted mine simular to the warn setup just a bit to the sede and behind the motor, while I was at it ran wires for cab switches, The stock cables work fine if all else fails just extend the ground wire and mount it where you want all that wire does it supply an extra ground path for the solenoids, in case the mounting bracket for the solenoid provides a poor ground

I had a dash switch on my CJ, but almost never used it.  My winch was used mainly for pulling other people, and sitting in the cab or being tethered to a wire sucks.

i like the idea of an on dash switch more than wireless ($30 sounds a lot better than $120...) electronics and me don't go well together.... it all started the 2nd week of my 1st real job when i connected 2 12v batteries for my bosses motor home / van and created a arc welder by accident.....  ..... I think for now i will connect the wire to somewhere that it reaches from the pic solenoid location.

For pulling other people the remote works well for pulling yourself I love the in dash switches, 2 switches some wire cheap fix
