Vehicle Speed sensor?
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:37:51 PM »
I recently replaced the vehicle speed sensor on my 92 yj 2.5l and it still isn't working.  all fuses are still good and the old sensor would work for about 6 tenths of a mile then quit.  I replaced the sensor with a real mopar replacement and had to rewire the connector.  any help or info on this.  I have checked all over the forum and have found little. thanks.  This jeep only has 76k on it right now and would love to keep actual mileage so I can sell it some time.

ok so I checked power and I am getting power to the sensor on one wire.  this is a three wire connection setup that came right from mopar.  aftermarket does not work because they send out a two wire connection at 100$ or so at wholesale costs.  I still have no idea why it's not working.  I pulled the gear out and checked that already, everything is good there.  all the teeth seem to be ok. nothing is chewed up. :brick:

Have you got the sensor rotated properly?  If you notice there are several numbers on the body of the sensor by the notches.  Those tell you what position to install it in based on the number of teeth on your gear.  Having it oriented incorrectly will make the gear not touch the driving gear.

Thanks oldjeep.  I just called Cascade 4x4 here in Michigan and he said the same thing you said.  sounds like I will have to have another person helping me and read the speedometer.  Cascade told me to pop the sensor out and spin it with my hand and it should read it then.  that will tell me the gear isn't lined up.  Now to go get soaked under the dripping snow.

Thanks Jeffy.  I placed the gear in right and spun the shaft and it spun the gear.  I spun the sensor by hand and nothing worked still no read.  Still have power coming to the sensor, so now I'm going to have to check the dash and instrument cluster.          Is this common for YJ's to have a corroded cluster?  My RPM's work just fine just not the speedo.          :brick:  yes still banging my head

Clusters aren't usually an issue unless it's really old.  Do you know if the speedometer works?  Maybe the VSS is bad again?  Do you know if the original one was actually bad?  I think the easiest thing to do is have a friend who has a YJ and swap the working VSS in and see.  Also, you can swap the dead one in and see if it's really dead.

Thanks again.   well I took it all apart and found a wire loose and cannot find where it would have connected. The wire has a small connector on it and is a cylinder shape.  Looks old though, and has two wires running to it which would make me think it would have something to do with the speedo for sending info back and forth.       Now are all speed clusters made in japan for a jeep?

Where's the connector located?  Picts?

Yes, the factory gauges are all made in Japan.

This is the wire I found not connected and it was just sitting right under the steering colum. the wires are orange and black.

Looks like it might be for the light that would normally sit above the switch panel.  I'm going to guess the plug is on the right side of the steering column?

yeah that's also what I have heard.  thanks Jeffy.  I will be digging into it a bit more today.  I don't work inside the shop as a tech so I have to wait for everyone else to get the jobs cleared to start on it.  working outside when it's in the teens isn't all that fun either.  Thanks for all your help.

You might have to start checking the wires with a multi-meter.  I'd re-seat the plug in the off chance that's it.  The ribbon looks good though.
